Meet Meghan Nechrebecki of Health Care Transformation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Nechrebecki.

Meghan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been passionate about health care. When I was a little girl I always wanted to be a doctor because I hated feeling sick and wanted to help people feel better. In high school I volunteered at the local hospital gift shop in Stillwater, Minnesota and then went off to college at UW-Madison as a pre-med student studying Biochemistry and Spanish. While in college I volunteered at the homeless shelter and nursing home, won a Hilldale scholarship for cancer research, and kept up my passion for improving health.

When I went to a Peace Corps meeting and learned about a Master’s in Public Health degree I decided to pursue this route of a Master’s International Program prior to heading to med school which landed me out in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. While I was there the Affordable Care Act was getting passed and I was taking courses on how poor-performing the U.S. healthcare system is in comparison to all other developed countries.

We are incredibly high cost, have poor health outcomes, and we don’t insure the entire population. I decided then and there that I want to fix the U.S. healthcare system and not be another cog in the broken wheel. After grad school, I started working as a consultant for the Primary Care Medical Home Program at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. I took ownership of the cost reduction/quality improvement efforts in the Washington D.C. region where I would analyze and present opportunities to the health systems and providers in the program.

I was then one of the first thirty employees at a population health start-up called Privia Health where I did business development to grow their physician network through the mid-Atlantic. I then was a Senior Dedicated Advisor at the Advisory Board Company using survey solutions to improve physician and employee engagement at health systems across the U.S. From there UCLA Health recruited me to manage population health analytics and systems improvement to reduce systemic costs and improve patient outcomes for their at-risk populations.

Throughout my career, I saw incredible gaps in the healthcare system, one of the largest being the lack of patient engagement and activation on how to navigate the U.S. healthcare system. I, therefore, started Health Care Transformation on the side envisioning video content and resources that support individuals on how to understand and optimally navigate the system so they can achieve their best health at the best price.

Since then we have branched out to provide physical and mental health improvement content by video as well as boutique healthcare consulting to payers, providers, and employers.

Has it been a smooth road?
Oh, nothing is ever a smooth road! I’ve constantly been coming up against challenges, but I think the key is to be scrappy and resilient and use the support of those around you. I had never started a business before, so each component has been a learning lesson- everything from teaching myself to develop a website to learning marketing to developing legal contracts.

And sometimes we make mistakes that we couldn’t foresee until after the fact, so the key is to be resilient, learn the lesson, and move on. Challenges are to be expected. But fortunately, I’m not one to see obstacles. Obstacles to me are something that stops you in your path. Nothing can hold back my passion for helping people.

And I couldn’t do everything I’m doing without the support of those around me. I’ve been so humbled by the number of people who have helped me along my journey to build Health Care Transformation, whether through concrete guidance, mentorship, favors, or simply cheering me on. I could have never done this on my own, and I’m so grateful to have all these folks in my life!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
