Meet Meghan Clem and Katie Webb of Intertwined Events in Irvine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Clem and Katie Webb.

Meghan and Katie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Katie and I first meet in high school while volunteering. Back then, we would have never imagined being where we are today. If you told us we would be business partners running a company of our own and would be the directors of our own non-profit… you would have far exceeded any dreams we had then. We are truly living our own daydream! After high school, Katie and I went to two different schools. I attended USC. Go Trojans! Katie went to San Diego State. We found ourselves running back into each other while volunteering in the summers. It was during our volunteering time that we realized we loved working together and had a really great, unique blend of skill sets… she was the yin to my yang. We realized it was time for us to work together and create a company of our own.

In 2008, we started Intertwined Events, a wedding and special event planning company to help create and execute the event of your dreams. The early life of Intertwined occurred during the peak of the recession and business was tough. However, it was important for us to stay on course and trust in our skills, vision, and passion. Throughout the start of our company, we continued to volunteer. After a combined 30 years of volunteering for and working with people with special needs, we were blessed to found our own non-profit entity to help fill the ever-growing need for respite and recreational services for adults and children with disabilities. Giving back is at the heart of who we are, it’s the foundation for our friendship and our business and has given us more than we could ever give. But that doesn’t stop us from trying! Our nonprofit, RAD Camp, offers those with special needs in Orange County opportunities for fun, social interaction and growth while providing valuable respite for caregivers, as well as Community Service opportunities for local youth.

Camp is made up of two week-long summer camps, one for adults ages 18 and over, and one for Children, ages 4-17. We also offer two weekend camps, one for adults and one for children. We host more than 135 campers at the adult camp and more than 85 campers at the children’s camp with a 98% return rate for all participants and have nearly 500 volunteers that help make it happen! We are the largest residential camp service people with special needs in Southern California!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We started our brand during the peak of the recession. The market was an absolute mess when we started our company and most people had to downsize or close up shop. We realized being new to the market that we had nowhere to go but up! Like I said before, it was important for us to stay on course and trust in our skills, vision, and passion- which we did! We hustled, we never stopped grinding. In the early days we took all the work we could get our hands on… didn’t matter how big or small. We also continued to work full time jobs as we built Intertwined. It took us nearly 3 years to be able to build the client base and revenue streams we needed to quit our jobs and pursue our company full time. That was a big win for us. I think that’s what has made us so successful in the long run because we experience the bad and the ugly right at the start of our company. So, when things were good, we really appreciated it and were grateful!!!!

Intertwined Events – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Specialize in Weddings and Special Events, we believe that if you can celebrate it, we can plan it! We pride ourselves on making the planning of an event a fun and easy process for our clients. We want them to enjoy the planning process as much as they enjoy the night of their event!! In addition, we work to make every event special and unique to our clients. We have built a culture within our office and our clients that empowers women to hold themselves with integrity and strength. We are most proud of being able to found our own non-profit and getting to see our office and clients involved in an organization that means so much to the both of us!

We’ve truly created a family within the workspace and beyond. Our clients, the vendors we work with, and our own team are truly friends and family. We are blessed to call this our jobs each and every day. It’s not always easy, there are long nights, big decisions to make, no handbook or guide, but we believe in saying YES! We believe that if you follow your heart and put in a crazy amount of hard work and you say YES when opportunity or inspiration strike, you really can have it all!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our proudest moment will always go back to starting our own business, building a culture that we truly love and thrive in and ultimately that has led us to be able to create RAD Camp! It’s a blessing being able to provide programs for those with special needs in Orange County. It’s amazing to see opportunities that involve fun, social interactions and growth while providing much-deserved respite for caregivers, as well as life-changing volunteer opportunities for local youth in our community. It’s a ripple effect and RAD reaches far beyond our camps and programs. The campers are empowered and take that into their daily lives, the volunteers understand acceptance and the importance of giving back and take that back to their schools, jobs and families. RAD stands for Rising Above Disabilities and it’s our mantra – RISE ABOVE! It doesn’t matter the challenge or obstacle, you can always do something! In the words of our favorite gal Marie Forleo – everything is figure-out-able! Get after it! You can do it!
