Meet Megan McCarter of The Little Branch in East Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan McCarter.

Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I first got started with floral design, it was actually a group effort. A dear friend of mine was getting married and could not afford a florist, so a mutual friend along with myself decided to make all the floral arrangements for her. Our friend was a wedding photographer and pretty much walked me through the process as she had seen so many different designs and arrangements from shooting the weddings. We had so much fun doing it that we thought to yourselves, “Why not start a little side business?”

We poured over visuals and went to the mart week after week, buying florals and putting arrangements together, taking classes and just really challenging ourselves. After a month or two we launched and it just took off from there.

Has it been a smooth road?
Honestly, it has been really smooth. It is pretty remarkable and we are so lucky. I think our timing and style had come along at just the right time. Weddings were veering away from the traditional look. Planners and designers were really starting to push the envelope with more personalized events and off beat designs. We never thought it would be a full-time business, but our second or third wedding was featured in the blog Once Wed and that sort of pivoted us into a bigger market. That year I believe we had twelve events, then twenty, then thirty and it just kept growing.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are an event floral design company, specializing in weddings and corporate events. We are known for using unusual product and lots of texture. Our designs are pretty fluid. We really like to focus on natural and organic pieces, unique shapes and vessels and a range of hues.

I am really proud of the fact that we continue to push the envelope. If a client comes to us with a crazy idea, or something new, we jump at the chance to have the opportunity to put it together. We strive to keep each event unique and personal and I really think that is what sets up apart. We listen to our clients and give them what they want opposed to forcing trends or ideas on them.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes! It is the perfect place. I couldn’t imagine running this business anywhere else. We are so lucky to have the Flower Mart on top of so much local product to forage. The weather lends itself our “wedding season” pretty much existing the entire year and there are so many amazing venues to work at, so you really can’t lose.
