Meet Megan Happ of Bella Jeanne Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Happ.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve had a strong interest in cameras since I was a little girl and I’ve always been a very creative person. In 2003, I began to fall in love with Travel Photography and started taking big trips or day trips to just shoot for fun. I did that for years and even sold some of my images online and to clients. In 2013, BJP was officially born and I began taking on clients as a second source of income while my husband was in school. In 2015, I niched my business into newborn, maternity, baby, children, and family and began extensive training in those areas.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish I could say it was a smooth road! Shooting with newborns requires a lot of training including safety, posing, lighting, use of props, and many other aspects. On top of learning how to get myself to where I want to be from a technical aspect, I’ve had to learn everything about running a business while also working a full-time job and being a mom. It’s been a lot of 18-hour days! The struggles have changed week to week. Whether it’s getting better at my craft or learning about how to market to the correct audience, there’s always something new.

Bella Jeanne Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Bella Jeanne Photography specializes in Newborn, Maternity, Baby, Children, and Family. Our studio provides fine art portraiture and an excellent full-service customer experience.

What makes our studio stand out is not only the fine art images we provide, but the training we have in newborn safety. We’ve trained with some of the world’s most experienced newborn photographers, many of those trained in newborn safety, including a newborn photographer who is also a newborn physiologist.

In addition, we are the first studio in the state of California to receive our Newborn Photography Safety Certification from the American Association of Newborn Photography Safety (AANPS). We are certified to handle newborns safely and practice safe posing in our studio. Parents can rest assured that we know how to safely handle their newest addition while providing excellent quality images.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
As an artist, you see your work evolve with every shoot you do. I’ve had multiple proud moments where I was very happy with how my art has evolved. My proudest moment is getting my business to a point where I could quit my corporate job of 13 years and be able to provide for my family solely on this studio that I’ve built from the ground-up. When you take a minute and think “wow, *I* did that,” it really is a proud moment. This business was built on a lot of blood, sweat, and tears and it is where it is today because of all of the hard work I’ve put in.
