Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Touborg.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Meg. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my career at the Saks Fifth Avenue Executive Training Program and went on to hold executive roles for luxury companies such as Coach, Kate Spade, Waterworks and Rose Tarlow Melrose House. I was with all of these companies through inflection points, so I experienced the strategies in real-time and the importance of communications and alignment behind such moments. Ultimately, it is the strategy behind brands’ turning points that fascinated me most.
In 2012, I decided I wanted to focus solely on business development concepts and plans, and step away from the nitty-gritty of running a company. (During and after the Great Recession, there was a lot of nitty-gritty!) So I founded Metworks Inc., a business strategy firm with a mission to advise leading architects and interior designers on their companies’ communications and business development tactics, in other words, to deliver “marketing intel.”
I am also the co-founder of the Leaders of Design Council, where my partner and I devise and plan monthly activities leading up to an annual international conference for 150 top architects and designers, including all programming and venue planning and every last detail. We are currently working on Prague 2019! I got to where I am today with the help of many close mentors who helped me to identify my interests and strengths and build my career around them.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Hindsight is everything – right? My career road looks smooth from a perspective of almost 30 years (gulp), but there have been bumps and twists and detours and high and low grades that I wasn’t expecting at the time. I have always avoided the breakdown lane – but sometimes I do have to pull into the rest stop!
The biggest challenges have come from two different sources: being unable to align fundamental professional goals with senior colleagues, and the pressures of being a single mother to 3 kids.
Please tell us about Metworks Inc.
Metworks Inc. is a business development firm that specializes in communications, event design, and strategic planning for design industry leaders. We help our clients break down their ideas into goals, priorities, and timelines that are actionable. And then we get it done!
We are known for being passionate and nimble. At Metworks Inc., each project is different, and our team is known for staying true to our results-driven strategic process through projects of all scales and varieties. We love research and designing different approaches to issues and opportunities that are grounded in facts, in details, and in logic.
When we engage with a client, we do not consider ourselves an outside resource, but rather a part of their team for the length of our engagement. I like to say “we wear their pinnie!” (Reference to the colored vest you wear on the field to distinguish teammates). We are proud of our ability to instill a high level of mutual trust with our clients.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
So many great memories – here’s one:
As I grew up in the Boston suburbs in the 70’s, we had a lot of snow. My father would build a skating rink of plastic tarp from the hardware store, and we would fill it with the garden hose and wait for it to freeze over so we could skate in the backyard. He also created iced “luge-like” sledding trails, which sometimes got scary!
