Meet Meg Mangano of REJOOV in Brentwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Mangano.

Meg, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up as a competitive athlete, I have always had a passion for nutrition and performance. I thought it was incredible that the food we ate and the amount we drank was a science, not only in health and disease, but also in sport! Early on I knew I wanted to share this passion with people and help them feel and perform their best, too, both in sport and in life.

Even though the field of sports dietetics was not yet defined when I was getting my degree in Nutritional Sciences, I did whatever I could to learn from dietitians that worked with athletes, and created programs at my University to learn through experience, too

I followed my passion and throughout my career I have worked with many incredible individuals, musicians, actors, athletes and a variety of teams around the globe including the National Soccer Teams for the US, Turkey, Mexico and Qatar, as well as 7 years as the team nutritionist for the LA Clippers. Each level, individual and team has been fun, exciting, challenging and rewarding.

However, it was about 10 years ago, that my health took a major hit and I was sick for over 6 months straight! I went the traditional route and through all of the conventional testing, I was told this was normal and that I was healthy and fine. This couldn’t be, I only got sick one time a year in the past! Now I was sick, I was tired, I couldn’t focus, I couldn’t last a day without a nap and I slid into a depression, never being able to feel like myself.

Much like many challenges in life, on the other side of that challenging time, I was so thankful for the experience! Through this, I studied and learned more about functional nutrition and the additional tools that existed to help people learn more about their whole bodies, health, individual blueprint and their immunity! This was how I became well again, even better than before, and elevated my practice to ensure that each client I worked with was heard, looked at as an individual and began to combine the best of elements in nutritional counseling, functional nutrition, performance nutrition and complementary practices.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The only smooth part of the road was knowing that I was going where I wanted to be – following my passion and helping others feel and be their best. Struggles can include the fact that nutrition is a controversial field, with many different approaches and opinions, open to anyone defining themselves as nutrition experts and saturated with “diets” – programs that start and stop. All of this can make it challenging but also fascinating, because the science and integrative, personal approach is forever evolving. In the end, what matters most is that you are safely helping your clients in a manner that best supports their needs and makes sense to you as a compassionate, informed and educated practitioner.

Being an entrepreneur provides its own set of bumps in the road, from often being the only female in a male dominated sport-industry, to being the care giver and business woman at the same time having to stand my ground for the value of my time and work. Through these challenges, I find that being authentic, genuine and serving with integrity and confidence builds the foundation of trust and strength needed to be successful.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business, REJOOV, is a sports nutrition and functional nutrition private practice and consulting business. I have been practicing in the field for over 15 years, specializing in sports dietetics and functional / integrative nutrition. I offer comprehensive programs addressing the above separately or together, creating individualized and anti-inflammatory nutrition programs nourishing people from the inside out. I work closely with clients using a combination of nutritional counseling, integrative nutrition and specialty functional testing to fully understand each person’s health and fitness needs and personal goals. I am proud that I have been able to help a wide range of individuals understand their health, performance and nutrition needs, on the journey to reaching their goals and feeling better than they ever knew they could.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up on the East Coast in upstate New York. My parents were and continue to be very active, healthy and involved in the community. As a family we spent a lot of time hiking and camping, with an appreciation for the environment and beautiful wildlife we were surrounded by.

I was enrolled in sports as far back as I can remember, with basketball being my first love, but the exciting game of lacrosse took over and was where I excelled. I had set a goal at a young age to earn a scholarship to college. I was hardworking, athletic and soaked in whatever I could from the camps I attended to the older players I looked up to. I was always social, loyal, committed to trying my best and loved my family, friends and teammates.
