Meet Maylene Mesa of Mercy P. June in Covina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maylene Mesa.

Maylene, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, I started writing in third grade and I never stopped. I don’t remember how I picked up the hobby, all I remember is one day I wrote a poem about Summer then read it in class the next day. As a child and an adult I really enjoyed reading and being someone other’s can read is an ultimate goal.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being a writer has many challenges. Something I constantly struggle with is depression that alone is my biggest obstacle. There are days when I want to give up because I don’t feel as worthy than others days, and then days where I tell myself I am a great writer. Other obstacles I dealt with are losing my mother a few years back, and my fear of public speaking. The thing about obstacles is that they can always be overcome.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am known as a writer, poetry more specifically. One thing I’ve learned about myself is that I am an empath, and I can not only feel my emotions and vibes but I can feel other’s as well. I am able to be in a moment I have never been in by simply feeling someone else’s energy, and that resonates with people by the picture I paint with my words.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family, they are my biggest supporters which include my daughter, my best friend, Cuba and my significant other, Ryan. They constantly push me to do more and hopefully soon with the help of them, I will be putting together a book. I speak/read my poems to both my best friend and S.O. Because in a sense they are part of my team, and I share everything with my confidants.
