Today we’d like to introduce you to Maye Andarza.
Maye, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story begins with the fact that I love color. I love glitter. I love shine, and I love being bold. Growing up, I was always interested in makeup. I have early memories of watching my mom get ready by doing her hair, applying her makeup and then taking care of me. I think since then I’ve always been interested. I really took a step forward in high-school and began creating “looks” and even started posting them on Instagram. I was the friend that did everyone’s makeup for fun. My confidence then was high but I then became embarrassed because I found out that people in my school had found my work and started sharing it. It wasn’t until after I graduated high school and took some time into finding my Interests that I decided I really wanted to try my best at it. Since then, I’ve been offering small services for anyone that needs to get glammed up for special occasions. It’s been a work in progress and each client I have had has been super supportive and encouraging, which definitely keeps me inspired.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’d say that my journey has been smooth in the sense that I decide what is best for me and my brand. I am a smaller account and do not have a lot of followers, so my work doesn’t receive the attention I would like but I see this more of an opportunity to have fun and almost keep it therapeutic for myself. I am blessed each time a client reaches out to me, for it gives me the opportunity to let others see my work and hopefully through word of mouth get more bookings. It isn’t easy being a makeup artist without clients. Makeup is expensive and each product has expiration dates. Being a full-time college student and trying to support your business is difficult. Yet the reward of being able to create is worth it.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My company is social media based on Instagram. It started out as something fun and entertaining for me to do and has turned into a small business. Clients have the option to reach out to me through direct message or email. I am a self-taught makeup artist that specializes in formal, party, creative and everyday makeup. I am well known for group appointments for school dances, Halloween parties, quinceaneras, sweet sixteens, and bridesmaids makeup. The thing that I am most proud of is that I was able to make a name for my company through my own passion for makeup. By simply posting my work, I have been able to gather a small but positive audience for my brand. I believe this really sets me apart from other makeup artists because I’m not doing this for pure social media gain. I’m doing this because I genuinely enjoy being able to transform someone through makeup and receiving positive feedback.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
In Orange County, there is so much inspiration wherever you go. The thing that I like best is that people aren’t afraid to show what they’re proud of. As a resident in Southern California, I have seen a lot of different types of people, cultures, values and so much more, but one thing that I’ve found is that everyone in Orange country loves to get ready and look their best. In Orange County, there is competition everywhere, and word of mouth goes far. Everyone knows someone and the circle is small. That’s why it’s really important that I try my best in each makeup look I do for my clients. One wrong detail and the client could turn away a couple of opportunities.
