Meet Maya Delgado of HeARTS of Maya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Delgado.

Maya, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Thank you for having me! I am 13 years old and I’m an actress, singer and songwriter. I was born in Chicago, Illinois to parents of Mexican and Cuban decent, which I’m very proud of. I like to call myself “CubaMex!” I moved to Dallas, TX in 2014 and recently moved to LA and I’m loving it! I started professionally training at the age of 8 after my Abuela urged my mom to take me to voice lessons because I sang ALL the time! I think I got my love of music from my Abuelo, who past away three years ago. He was a folk singer in Mexico and he always encouraged me to express myself through song. I miss him so much but I know he is still my biggest fan!

I love to journal and write my thoughts and ideas which usually result in songs. I’ll be releasing a couple of songs I have been working on during quarantine later this year. Watch out for announcements on my IG @mayasdelgado! Also later this year, I will appear in a couple of episodes of the Emmy-Award winning Apple TV+ show, Ghostwriter. I have appeared in numerous national and bilingual (Spanish) commercials – my Whole Foods commercial is currently airing! I have also performed in award winning short films and musical theater productions. In 2016, I founded a nonprofit foundation, HeARTS of Maya, to assist youth who want to pursue the arts (more on this later!). I have been humbled to receive numerous accolades for my philanthropic work and received the Spark Award in 2018 for my commitment to advancing the arts. I have an amazing team representing my artistic endeavors- A3 Artists Agency and Velocity Entertainment. Since signing with them, I have received many more rewarding opportunities and I look forward to what lies ahead!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve been really blessed to have many supporters and mentors along the way, especially my family. I have been very fortunate to train with some of the country’s best acting and vocal coaches. However, this industry has also made me grow “thick skin” because a lot of it is rejection before opportunity. I have learned about patience and perseverance and not giving up on my dreams- these are life lessons. Being an actress and singer are professions you have to truly love and have a passion for, regardless of the outcome.

Please tell us about HeARTS of Maya.
I believe becoming a good actress and singer requires training, learning from as many avenues as you can, and above all, dedication. It’s also a big financial investment. Throughout my training, I noticed that some students were not able to continue classes, because they did not have the financial resources to continue. It made be frustrated because they were so talented and many of them, I looked up to. I felt I had to do something to help them continue their training. So in 2016 (I was 10 years old!), I founded HeARTS of Maya (HOM), a non-profit, 501c3 foundation that provides educational scholarships to youth who want to pursue the arts, specifically music, acting, and/or dancing. To date, HOM has awarded over 30 scholarships to deserving youth in Dallas, TX, who have a passion for singing, acting and /or dancing. This has been my greatest accomplishment in life! I am in the process of establishing a Los Angeles chapter to be able to do the same for LA youth. Through this foundation, I hope to not only assist talented youth, but encourage others to “Find the ART in their HeARTS,” because everyone deserves to have a creative outlet.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
In retrospect, I think everyone always wishes they could do something differently. However, I am very happy with what I have been able to accomplish thus far. I wouldn’t do anything differently because quite frankly, the “stars have aligned” and I have been very fortunate to have such great opportunities and support along the way 🙂
