Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Champion.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Maya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When the pandemic started, I could feel my anxiety growing daily. One of my best friends suggested I start a hobby since I am a creative type, to keep my hands and mind busy. So I purchased some clay and made a few lady incense holders. I put five up for sale on a whim on my Instagram, and boy did it snowball.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a tough road, between people consistently ripping off my idea, using my photos to sell their pieces, and the pressure of starting a business in the current climate. I have been learning more than ever in my life how to roll with a change.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about your work?
I make ceramic pieces, predominantly I sell lady form incense holders. I am proud that I finally took the chance to invest in myself, that I run my social, my website, contests, and make every piece by hand. One of my goals when starting my own brand was to empower other local women, or women that I believe in that I’ve met along the way in NYC or my hometown (Syracuse). So I will often do trades to promote smaller businesses or post stories about companies that are just launching. I try to also make time for any creatives that I know that want advice for how to move with their labels. This business for me is all about connection, this time has rooted me further in a feeling I’ve always felt, we’re all finding our way to it together.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe how truly authentic I allow myself to be on my platform. When I feel off, I don’t shy away from trying to normalize that feeling. I think my faith in my creative brain and my innate need to connect with people has helped immensely. I have made so many friends through this, just through allowing space for the connection.
