Meet Maya Benperlas and Kalli Quigg of Viva Rescue in Sylmar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Benperlas and Kalli Quigg.

Maya and Kalli, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Viva Rescue became a reality after we started working in CA wildfires and natural disasters saving hundreds of animals and after working with hundreds of abused and neglected horses. We started to realize the work we were doing was vital and VIVA was born!

We found such a need for CA disaster rescue as well as innovative, specialty equine rescue and rehabilitation.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road- but it has been a beautiful road of heartbreak and healing. We are able to transform the lives of so many animals and assist so many communities in need and at the end of the day, it is always so worth it!

Myself and my partner Kalli fund the nonprofit mostly through our own donations. A small percentage of our funding comes from public support and donors/grants. It’s been a tough road learning to create a balance between it all as we run the nonprofit from the physical labor to the fundraising, marketing, social media and more!

Please tell us about Viva Rescue.
Viva Rescue is an animal rescue and sanctuary that aims to create a more compassionate world through sustainable solutions to global issues.

We specialize in innovative equine rehabilitation, natural disaster assistance, our Wild mustang Program and helping low-income communities with pet assistance and supplies.

We are really proud of the innovative care we provide. We provide over 30+ different alternative, complementary and holistic healing modalities and therapies on top of state of the art veterinary care. We go the extra mile to treat each horse as an individual and give them every opportunity to thrive and recover. We like to offer “horse heaven” for each of our residents!

Some therapies we offer include massage therapy, chiropractic care, PEMF, cold laser, red light, CranioSacral, Kinesiology taping, Body talk and more!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We have had some incredible support from so many wonderful folks as we grow our organization. Our incredible Farrier, Blanca Guzman, our wonderful Veterinarian Rachael Sachar, our dedicated board members, Caroline Zelder and Frank Antonelli, and our inspirational friend and colleague Louise Linton who has made the rescue of so many horses possible, to name a few!
