Meet Matthew Ward of Warforknowledge in East Hollywood – Koreatown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Ward.

Matthew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey for me begins at the age of 21, it was my friends birthday and we were celebrating by drinking and acting foolish in the spirit of delusional ignorance. As we drove home on the 5 freeway headed towards the 710, our car was traveling at an incomparable acceleration of 110 mph. My friend, one for the theatrics, decided driving with his knees was the safest and logical way to maneuver. With a slight slip and miscalculation, the car began to fishtail and swayed from side to side resulting in our car beginning to violently spin out of control, a violent metal ballerina spiraling to our potential demise. We miraculously shifted from one side of the freeway threading the needs between cars avoiding collision, hit the center divider and by the sheer force of immense energy we rebounded to the opposite side and up the embankment.

All the while in the car, as I sat in the back seat and my life flashing before my eyes, my necklace broke off, which was a dog tag that honored and commemorated our friend Joshua “MD” Whittle who had died serving in Afghanistan for the Marines. The Dog tag flew off shimmering in moonlight ever so gently landed into the hands of the driver as we were spiraling out of control at 110 mph. It is my belief and feeling that our creator and our friend had been looking out for us that night and kept us out of harm’s way to see another day on this earth. It was this moment that took an immense veil from my perception and introduced to me to a deeper level of consciousness & awareness of the mystical nature of this incarnation and a defining factor why I am continually to devote myself and express through my artwork a deeper truth that is the oneness of all existence, the loving source from which we all are created and will one day return.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To keep it simple, I feel that the person who will potentially hold you back the most is yourself. War for knowledge is a constant struggle between my own personal good and evil, my loving awareness and my parasitic ego that wishes to feed upon my toxicity and the illusion of the need to fulfill worldly desires that doesn’t serve a higher purpose of spreading love and healing capabilities. I’ve dedicated myself to look inwardly and identify the source of the pain and space of violence to heal it with compassion and in turn create a foundation of loving spaciousness that allows me to access and be a portal to let creativity flow through freely. My artwork has evolved into an incredibly therapeutic and self-healing introspective creative outlet to express how I am feeling and to analyze that which I am suppressing within me. “Truth waits for eyes unclouded by longing.”

Warforknowledge – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
War for Knowledge is a journey in self-discovery, self-love and the exploration of consciousness. Learning to be responsive rather than reactive. Expressing unconditional love for the person viewing and allowing them to see a reflection of their own beauty along their unique journey in this world of form. Artwork that connects us all in union and embraces our oneness. I create Illustrations that celebrate our infinite possibilities and wisdom. I’ve recently begun to tattoo my friends and to share a deeply intimate space with them in giving them a piece that honors their journey and protects their spirit and energy in the form of ink on skin, something they can look at and feel the power and energy that reminds them of the divinity that they hold within them!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Developing art that connects to people and has deep spiritual meaning that unites us all in unconditional love and understanding for one another. Making connections with people and developing a deeper ability to LOVE!

Much love, Godless & Goodluck. You are capable of accomplishing that which you set your mind to.

Ain’t nothing to it but to do it!
