Meet Matthew Partsch of Blue Cloud Photography in San Pedro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Partsch.

Matthew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My love of the outdoors makes for frequent forays into the Californian wilds, where I delight in the stunning vistas of Los Angeles Beaches, and the Pacific Coast.

My company name, Blue Cloud Photography, comes from the time of day before or after the sun rises: the blue hour.

I grew up in the woods in Pennsylvania and frequently got lost while riding my bike as far as I could for the challengeof findingmy way back.

I bought my first camera in 1998 when living in the beautifullandscapes of Kentucky. I read the camera books and poured over the camera catalogs to figure out which camera to buy, which film to use and self-taught myself everything I could about HOW to take photographs – Aperture, Shutter speed, film ISO, Slides, lenses and other gear.

The misty mornings and grazing horses in Kentucky frequently caused me to pull over while driving to work and allowed me to discover WHY I take photographs. I love the surreal feeling of the mornings before everyone wakes up.

In 2004, I discovered the magical world of macro when digital photography started.

I made 1,000’s of images of baby grasshoppers.

I am currently in Los Angeles enjoying the amazing sunrises and sunsets.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I always had the desire to do more with my images than post them on the internet. So I started joining art shows that showcase photography and other art. I really love talking about a particular image and seeing it blown up to 36 inches instead of the tiny cell phone.

Starting a fine art business is not easy. Setting up and being at shows for three days straight is hard work. Most people walk by, while others are blown away and purchase $1,500 images. I love meeting new customers and hearing their story.

I had a 2 month solo show where I had to make 15 individual pieces. When the show was over, instead of hanging them up in my house, I decided to get a small shop at my local arts and crafts place called Crafted. It is located in San Pedro at the Port of LA and has some amazing artists and hand made items.

I have my photographs on display for purchase and provide photoshop and lightroom classes.

Please tell us about Blue Cloud Photography.
Blue Cloud Photography is a fine art gallery providing landscape, wildlife, and time lapses by Matthew Partsch.

I am proud to have my artwork displayed in local businesses in San Pedro and can provide large digital files for billboards or wall art for your businesses.

My friends and I started a local sunset/sunrise landscape photography Meetup called Donut Street Meet on Instagram. We meet in local areas around LA and repost their images on our Instagram page to inspire others to get up and get out there.

It is amazing when 80 photographers get together, each one sees the scene differently and produces art unique to them.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t have stopped taking photos for ten years because I didn’t have the right equipment.

Use what you have and enjoy the journey of finding the light!
