Meet Matthew Khalili of The Plan Writers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Khalili.

Matthew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
If you asked me 10 years ago where I’d be by 2018, “running a business plan company.”

Would not have been my answer. I sort of fell into the field by chance.

I used to run an e-commerce business and decided I wanted to obtain an MBA so that I could gain the skills necessary to grow the business. During my studies at USC, I took a class in business planning and discovered that I had a knack for it. My enthusiasm for the field was further fueled when I won the 2011 award for Top Grad Business Plan at Marshall School of Business from the Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies.

Suddenly, a lot of my friends, family members, and colleagues approached me asking for help with their business plans. Three thousand plans later, this became my business and my passion. I didn’t expect this to be my career path, but when I realized how much I love helping entrepreneurs succeed, this became a natural fit.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As The Plan Writers flourished, we experienced some growing pains along the way. I went from being a solo practitioner to building a practice with five full-time writers. During that period, I learned to delegate and empower my very talented team of writers, once I realized I could no longer do everything on my own.

I also faced a couple of legal battles, which comes with the territory of dealing with a variety of people and personalities. This taught me to develop proper contracts with clients as we scaled.

Sometimes we grew too fast and didn’t have the right infrastructure in place to manage the rising demand. I was forced to be resourceful and implement solutions and technologies quickly so that customer service levels wouldn’t dip despite being stretched too thin.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Plan Writers – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
About the company: My field is business plan preparation. We help entrepreneurs when they seek early-stage investor capital. We also help small businesses obtain loans and grants. But a large part of our business is helping immigrant investors obtain their visas with a proper business plan. I am also part of a licensed broker-dealer & global investment bank. So, in addition to helping clients with their business plans, we can assist with deal structuring, placement, advising, and more.

Most proud of: As an entrepreneur, I’m most proud that my company helps people realize their dreams. Starting a business or coming to the U.S. on an immigrant investor visa is a daunting task. The Plan Writers’ aim is to help them succeed by putting together quality business plans that comply with the guidelines set out by investors, lenders, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or whoever may be reading the plan.

Developing a plan to facilitate my clients’ journeys brings my team and me a lot of joy. Every day, we help people pursue the American Dream, by building businesses, generating opportunities, and creating jobs for the local economy. Being able to help people realize their goals while, at the same, time facilitating job creation is a dream come true for me.

What sets us apart?
A large part of The Plan Writers’ success lies in the training our people receive. We’re very selective about who to bring onboard and I always ensure that all our writers have a pertinent academic and work background. Each of our writers are MBAs or PhDs from top schools who also have diverse and real-world experience in mining, oil & gas, healthcare, hospitality, e-commerce, engineering, and more.

They also receive extensive business plan training once they join The Plan Writers team, specifically when it comes to listening and learning from a client. As a result, clients have overwhelmingly positive things to say about the care and knowledge of our writers.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We’re now integrating into investment banking, so if a client’s project is something that falls within our wheelhouse, we can facilitate finding investors for a select few of our clients.

  • Small, entry-level retail business plan: $1,500
  • Sophisticated, detailed venture business plan: $10,000
