Meet Matthew Kerley-Otten of Copper Top BBQ

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Kerley-Otten.

Hi Matthew, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My father and I started our BBQ business back when I was an English teacher/translator in Japan. He wanted to start a BBQ business but didn’t know the first thing about business. I decided to come back and help him with it. Over the years it grew and grew and then we got best restaurant in the US on Yelp of all places. We received a few other awards like best BBQ in California etc. We grew more and more popular over the years and my father retired a few years ago. Now we opened our new location and continue to grow! It’s been great.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been. There have been ups and downs but, one of the biggest problems we currently have and have always have is the hiring pool in this location. We have a very small town so it’s hard to find good employees, the ones we do find are great though!

As you know, we’re big fans of Copper Top BBQ. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We make BBQ for many of the travelers that go up and down the 395.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I use all of the Google apps for my business to help keep everything organized. I also use a lot of smart home items for the business to help run it including using it as a speaker mesh for music and for calling out orders.
