Meet Matthew Chung of Mattyblends in Cerritos/Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Chung.

Matthew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started cutting hair when I was 17 years towards the end of my senior year. I did not take barbering serious at all. When I first started, I had to ask my homies if I could cut their hair. As I graduated high school and went into my first year of college, I was still cutting but not as much due to my schoolwork. My second and third year of college, I was able to manage my time between school, barbering, and my other priorities and began to focus on my craft. I am 20 years old now and it is my 4th year in the barber game. I am cutting artist like Prince of LA and Mycrazyro.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some of the struggles I faced were mostly transitioning from high school to college. I was dealing with a drug addiction in 2017 and 2018. I was also dealing with a lot of anxiety and depression during that time. I was not doing so well in school (Cal State Long Beach) and not able to focus on cutting due to my personal struggles. In July 2018, I was saved by God and my life completely turned around. I started getting good grades in school and my barber clientele began to expand. I would not be here if it was not for God.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a self-taught barber. I learned to cut hair by watching YouTube videos and practicing on myself. What I am most proud of is proving all my haters and doubters wrong. I stayed focused on my craft when nobody else believed in me. What separates me most from others is my work ethic and mentality. I believe I am way ahead of individuals my age due to everything I went through and learned when I was struggling. I’m only 20 years old and it is my 4th year in the barber game and now I’m cutting artists like Prince of LA and Mycrazyro. I am on the path to becoming a celebrity barber. I also learned how to DJ in march 2020 and released five mixes out on SoundCloud. All of my mixes have a tremendous amount of plays.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. If you work hard and stay focused on your grind, opportunities will come. When something bad happens in your life and knocks you off your feet, you got to get up and show resilience. My life and business is all about overcoming struggles and expanding my game by any means necessary.
