Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew C Torres.
Matthew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was in a coffee shop wanting to talk to anyone about coffee. When I would try to talk to baristas they were too busy working. I would try to spark conversation with other coffee shop customers but the majority were not interested in coffee like I was or were meeting friends.
I thought to myself there had to be other coffee lovers out there that didn’t work as a coffee professional but were interested in learning more about coffee. I searched online for any workshops and most were designed for baristas, roasters, or coffee shop owners. Not consumers.
I decided to start a consumer coffee community about three years ago using Meetup. Fast forward to today and we are over 500 members across Los Angeles, Orange County and surrounding areas. We focus on consumer coffee education gatherings around brewing coffee, tasting coffee, and roasting coffee.
It’s been an amazing journey so far.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like anything that hasn’t been created it’s been a lot of rerouting and soul searching. I have a full-time job & this is my passion project.
A lot of the struggles were a lack of focus on my end. I didn’t know what Long Beach Coffee Club was going to be for the first year or so. After burning out numerous times I wrote out my personal mission statement & the Long Beach Coffee Club mission statement. This helped me focus.
To enjoy the little things while focusing on the big things. To serve and love as a member of my community. Inspiring others to cultivate self-worth. Activator of thoughts into action with care. To be wise and succinct with words. Always observing, learning, and staying curious. Creating products that informs, teaches and inspires.
Long Beach Coffee Club creates space for coffee consumer education and community.
Long Beach Coffee Club – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We host workshops, sell merchandise and are rolling out a new membership program soon to our members.
I am most proud of the deep friendships that have been started in our community.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
It’s mostly discipline & focus for me this year.
I think Nipsey had a wise perspective about it…
“Even as you make progress, you need the discipline to keep from backtracking and sabotaging the success as it’s happening.” Nipsey Hussle
