Meet Matt Liknaitzky of The Airplane Factory – Sling in Torrance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Liknaitzky.

Matt, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started flying when I was 16 (24 years ago) and have accumulated varied experience and ratings over the years. Aviation is my life and my work. To me, aviation is the intersection of the mind, the body, and emotion. When you fly, you need to have your mind clear and focused on managing and understanding everything that is going on around you with cold clarity. Physically, you need to manipulate the controls with coordination and precision. And then, there is a great emotional response of awe and exhilaration at being able to protect yourself in all 3 dimensions and gain perspective of the incredible world we live in. There is nothing else that I know of that engages every part of me all at once – other than flying. And, couple this to the fact that aviation is an endless source of learning and challenge, and you have a passion that will last a lifetime.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running any business is fraught with hurdles and difficulties. Sometimes things go smoothly for a while and sometimes you are playing ‘whack-a-mole’ with problems all day long. As soon as you overcome one issue, there is another one ready and waiting.

Some say, that success is partially a measure of how well a person is able to get over hurdles and how well they bounce back after being knocked down. And so I live with this in mind and hold perseverance as a great business strength.

Please tell us about The Airplane Factory – Sling.
Our company produces 2-seat and 4-seat recreational airplanes called Slings. We sell this ready-to-fly or in kit form so that enthusiasts can build the airplane themselves from a kit, with just basic knowledge and tools. For many, this is the culmination of a lifelong dream. We also teach people to fly down here in Torrance.

Most airplanes flown today are decades old and what we offer with our kitplanes is a modern design with efficient performance. The airplanes sell for the price of an expensive car and cost just around $50 an hour to operate, which is very low for an airplane.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
The experience of flying for the first time as a teenager is forever etched in my brain. I had already dreamed of it for a long time and the experience was as good as the dream.
