Meet Matt Fellows of MNKR Brand

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Fellows.

Matt, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In one form or another, I’ve had a brand and been making clothes since mid-high school circa 1993. My first two brands were called Easy St. and Mary. I’ve now been making clothes under the name MNKR (moniker) since 2003. Thinking I might change the name sometime soon though.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wouldn’t say the road has been an easy one by any means, but on the flip side not super challenging either. Not surprising, but the biggest obstacle has probably been money. I started the company with a couple of grand I got when my Great Aunt passed and have never had any investors, financial partners or rich parents.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Well, my first two brands seemed really limiting as far as what people expected from me so I wanted to start something that would be able to evolve as I grew as a person, so I started MNKR. MNKR echoes my life. It’s inspired by places I’ve been, things I love, struggles I find important, romance, loss, happiness, pain, etc. I’ve made a shirt about everything over the years.

I chose the name because I wanted something generic and moniker, which means ‘name or nickname’ seemed like a great choice at the time. Beyond a few collaborations, I’ve made every t-shirt design since I started in 2003. And besides my new venture into tattooing (@blackscraps), MNKR has been my main creative outlet for the last 15 years.

What were you like growing up?
Although my interests have expanded over the years, I’m basically the same dude I was as a kid. Kind of shy and always into skateboarding, punk music, drawing, being goofy, making stuff, the outdoors, and road trips.
