Meet Masu McLemore of Artbysu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Masu McLemore.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Masu. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I’ve been creating art since I could remember. I didn’t really understand I was good at it up until I won a drawing contest in elementary school and did a mural for them my 5th-grade year. From then on, I realized being an artist was something I wanted to do, but for fun. I decided I wanted to go to college for art right out of high school but not for painting.

Instead, I wanted to be a video game designer, I actually still do. Stop motion and set design are two creative outlets I really want to pursue. My favorite movies are Coraline and Spirited Away, and I’m a huge gamer. I like to play GTA and God of War specifically.

My goal was to be a game designer, set designer, and stop motion creator who happens to paint on the side. I just happened to get a following for my art by posting it on, and I decided to continue with it. That’s how “Artbysu” came about. I’ve actually only been painting for five years. I went to Otis College of Art Design and the School of Visual Arts in NYC pursuing digital media.

Once I took a break from school I decided to take painting seriously. Shortly after, I got pregnant, and my entire brand changed. I went from “Artbysu” to “The Art Mom.” Now, I show my process of not only an artist/entrepreneur but as a young mother as well.

Has it been a smooth road?
This path as a creative is far from smooth. As most know, I am a mother now to my son Legend. I didn’t create anything while I was pregnant and I didn’t create anything until after my son turned 1 year old. That was a hard time for me.

I suffered postpartum, I was going through a breakup with my son’s father, I was also working full time all while my son was barely four months old. That was the hardest time for me but having my son actually pushed me to create more than I did before. He’s really my motivation and a part of my growth. That’s when I decided to transform from “Artbysu” to “The Art Mom.”

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am an oil painter based out of Los Angeles, CA. I’m mostly known for my highly detailed portraits of musicians. Music really moves me, and it drives my artwork. I’m also known for the butterflies in my work. I’m most proud of my companies growth. At one point I didn’t have my own style, I didn’t know what I was doing in the art world, and I had no guidance. I got lost in the social media era.

Growing out of that and learning what I like to create, what I represent, and the name I made for myself makes me proud. I’m very open when it comes to my process, and I think that sets me apart from other artists. I want my supporters, as I call them, to know that I’m just like them and be able to connect with me on a personal level.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This is LA, where you can do literally anything. I’d say we have the best art scene aside from New York and of course Paris. Making it in either LA or NY is a great stepping stone to getting your business out there.

It’s also about who you know. You can have the talent but if you don’t have the support, resources, or “the plug” per’say, talent means nothing.
