Today we’d like to introduce you to Massimo Cibelli.
Massimo, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My drive for web design, and [digital] marketing started to emerge before the Internet became popular when I was a kid back in the mid-’90s… when we actually had face-to-face conversations!
I used a typewriter to passionately draft “news articles” about local events in my neighborhood.
Back then, it was mainly about who got hurt while playing or what the score of our street hockey game was.
I kept the unnecessary drama out. Sorry TMZ!
Then, in 2001, I moved in with a couple of roommates who designed web sites in the basement of the house we rented. Looked like some sort of hacker’s fort. Lots of cables, neon lights, computer screens everywhere.
Between then and now, I dabbled at a couple of newspapers that were affiliated with the Los Angeles Times.
This helped with the content aspect.
Since Search Engine Optimization (SEO) plays a huge role in a website’s online presence, and content development is one of the main driving factors behind it, I now have the experience to push my sites forward to higher rankings on Google and Bing. It’s definitely a process, but well worth it when looking at the analytics.
Designing someone’s site is more than just coding, creating and sending them the final link. I take each and every website personal as if it were my own business. To most, a website is the first impression they make to their clients. It has to be spot on and then up-to-date.
So, what makes my story so special? Answer: If I am able to make a positive change to someone’s life by pushing their business forward through a digital landscape – and give each and every detail the highest attention… then, I feel I’m making a difference in this world, and that’s the most important thing to me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Learning the details behind coding and what happens on a server/hosting level can sometimes be difficult.
But once you do it enough times, you will see how hosting and designing go hand-in-hand.
For example, if your website is slow, there are more reasons behind the issue than just “my internet is slow, what the heck.”
Looking at the php version, how the images are optimized, if the css and html is minified, etc.
The list goes on. Using countless tools to understand the reasons behind it being slow is really the beginning.
Though, once you get it right – it is just a matter of maintaining it from there.
State of Exterior – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I started State of Exterior a few years back. This stemmed from working at a couple of digital marketing firms and seeing how things were done and wanting to do it on my own, the right way.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is when you are positively affecting someone else. So, in my case, success would be the end result of my work for their business. If it’s making a positive change, then I’m all for it.
