Meet MaryRita Sarkissian of MaryRita Yoga in Glendale

Today we’d like to introduce you to MaryRita Sarkissian.

Thanks for sharing your story with us MaryRita. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m the founder of MaryRita Yoga. As a Lululemon Ambassador and YogaWorks Registered Yoga Teacher, I can confidently say that yoga was not something I found – instead, Yoga found me.

During a difficult time in my life, I decided to make a change – I wanted to give more attention to my breath, my mind, and my body. I started yoga back in college and actually had no interest in teaching. After I kept learning and connecting to the practice more and more, that’s when I knew it was something more than just “yoga” to me. It was very challenging at first, as it was foreign to my body and headspace, but it healed me. It heals me to this day. I am always trying to keep up with new ideas, sequences, and teachings, and I would not be where I am today without my students. It’s a constant learning experience, and you must always remember, it’s not how you feel before yoga – It’s how you feel after. Namaste!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Certainly not! I have faced a number of challenges – The most difficult part of being a yoga instructor is understanding that you cannot force anyone to love the practice. That’s a struggle I feel many teachers face, and we start to judge based on how many students show up to class. You can have two students, or you can have 30+ students. As long as you are there and collectively connecting on some level, you’re doing it right. It took me a while to learn that.

I’ve also learned that many people are actually afraid of getting to know who and how they really are on the inside. In our society, people are so focused on their outer appearance, they don’t make time to focus on being better looking on the inside. I think that’s the beauty of the yoga. Some of my students have told me that they started yoga as another workout, but committed because they have never felt so connected to themselves. Everyone reacts and takes something different out of it, and as an instructor, you really need to train and educate yourself on different personalities, reactions, and how to approach the concept of working on your inner-self.

Although I offer local group classes, I specialize in private sessions throughout Glendale, Pasadena, Downtown LA, and Studio City.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I had an obsession with Barney & Friends!
