Meet MaryAnne LoVerme of Los Angeles County Store in Silver Lake

Today we’d like to introduce you to MaryAnne LoVerme.

MaryAnne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The main mission since opening the shop in May 2014 has been to create a place where someone could find a gift or souvenir that is made in Los Angeles, and the mirror of that is the mission to support the people who are making amazing things in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is chock-full of wonderful shops I adore, but I wanted to make it easy for shoppers who, like me, are interested in what is being made locally. It’s how I like to shop, especially when I travel. I want to bring back something that is truly of the place.

The day before we opened I had the biggest anxiety attack I have ever had. I had to go home and lie down, overwhelmed by the huge responsibility I had taken on.

I pulled myself together, and the next day we opened with an amazing party where we sold lots of things!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been bumpy!

I am very grateful that have an accountant, because that has helped me keep my ducks in a row. But retail is a gamble, and some seasons are much leaner than others. This summer I had rent, sales tax, and income tax all due at the same time and the money in my bank account was not what I had anticipated it would be, so I turned to my community and dove into my first crowdfunding adventure.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Los Angeles County Store is the only shop dedicated exclusively to fine goods made in Los Angeles. From artisanal food to small housewares, apothecary to prints and stationery, it is a thoughtfully curated collection of beautifully crafted wares from across the county.

Specializing in gifts and gift boxes – both pre-selected and custom-made – Los Angeles County Store is a great place to get a housewarming or baby gift, a unique souvenir of the City of Angels, or something for that hard-to-shop-for someone.

I am most proud of the way we have worked with and fostered up and coming business owners and artists. In particular, our Fine Art Series, which features a new artist every month has been amazing!

What were you like growing up?
I was a quiet introspective child. I carried a book with me wherever I went so I would have something to shield me from anxiety-inducing social interactions. I was also very into television and Mad Magazine as a kid.
