Meet Martina Giles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martina Giles.

Hi Martina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am the creator of “In My Feels”. We were all asked as young kids, “what do you want to be when you grow up?”. I, with a childlike heart answered, “a businesswoman!”. In between then and now a lot has happened. As a result of the pandemic and major toll it has taken on the hospitality industry, I’ve had the opportunity to revisit my youthful aspirations and become a businesswoman! Every candle is inspired by different life experiences and my favorite “feels”. I’ve had the opportunity to live in a few different places boasting majestic sceneries and various adventures. One of my favorite “feels” is getting in the car and driving the open road to clear my mind and inhale the views and fresh air; so I decided to make a candle inspired by it 🙂

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My response to this question is based on career and not my personal life. I think to some degree, we all run into a few bumps along the way in any pursuit. I’d say the major obstacle I’ve faced in my career goals was the onset of the pandemic. I’ve worked in the hospitality for years and was working as a Restaurant Manager on the Oregon Coast when the pandemic hit. I remember I had just visited my home in Compton, CA and within a week my position at the Restaurant had been eliminated. Due to the sudden change, I decided to move back to California and had time to ponder on what I wanted to do next. While the pandemic posed as an obstacle, I decided to use it as an opportunity for entrepreneurship and start my candle business “In my feels”.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m currently a Candle Business Owner but before that, I’ve spent the prior ten years in hospitality industry. I started out working as a server at a catering company in Torrance and Los Angeles to SusieCakes Bakery in Marina del Rey. I spend my 2016 summer in Rhode Island working at one of the most prestigious Hotels in the World, The Ocean House. I’ve also spent some time working in private country clubs such as the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades and upon graduating from Cal Poly Pomona I moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts to work at Eastward Ho! Country Club. After experiencing club life, I moved on to restaurants which brought me to my previous role as a Restaurant Manager on the Oregon Coast. As a result of working in the hospitality industry, I developed a love for wine and decided to pursue the Court of Master Sommelier certification. I passed level 1 and am currently pursuing level 2 as a certified Sommelier. My current role now is being the owner of “In my feels”, a candle business. My candle business merges my previous experiences from personal to professional and gives me the opportunity to express them in scents and storytelling. I’m most proud of taking a chance and starting a business. My business specializes in soy-coconut candles, reed diffusers, wax melts and shower steamers.
