Meet Martie Bowser of Role Model Publicity

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martie Bowser.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Martie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Role Model Publicity actually started as an accident. I had a friend who was a talented artist but was shy and didn’t know too many people or how to approach people about his music. I just happened to know a couple of DJ’s and radio personalities and got them to listen and eventually play it in venues and across the city of Charlotte, NC. During this time, I was attending Appalachian State University and was pursuing a degree in public relations with hopes of becoming a sports agent.

I would make money on the side writing bios and small articles for people after I got introduced in the music scene in Charlotte, NC. I​was introduced to an artist named Nova Man who was a mentor for other artists in the area and he mentioned to me that I should merge my networking and writing skills and think about music publicity, I had NO idea what that was at the time.

I started doing some research and realized what the music/entertainment PR world was all about and I figured I would give it a try. I started with a number of indie artists and it grew from here. The first artist I ever worked with that called me a “publicist” and understood what the work entailed was an artist named TiZ, from North Carolina.

It was a lot of trial and error but, I cut my PR teeth working with him, and from there Role Model Publicity was born.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all, but the bumps have been blessings in disguise.

I would say one of my biggest struggles has been growing my network from Charlotte, NC and branching out. Making connections and building relationships in main sectors of entertainment and music such as Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York, as to where I can be an asset to clients looking for exposure. Social media has been a big help there. There are so many amazing people that I have worked with or who have helped me from across the world that I have never met and probably wouldn’t ever have the pleasure of meeting if I just focused on only working with people within my home base.

Another struggle that is kind of personal is just overcoming things associated with mental health and stepping outside of my own comfort zone. Funny enough, I’m an introvert, very reclusive, and suffer from social anxiety; so working in an industry that is literally based on being in the mix of everything can be draining at times. So the biggest obstacle is one I fight everyday actually… I think there is a misconception that publicists are these social butterflies and always “on” and for some that may be true but for a lot of us we have to recharge in different ways, and the true nature of PR can be daunting at times. I’m very open about dealing with anxiety and depression and other things that might be seen as a hindrance working in such a social industry. I am vocal about it to let other people know that it’s ok, and things shouldn’t stop you.

Role Model Publicity is a full-service media and public relations group. We serve everyone from the upcoming indie artist looking to get their feet wet and learn what a publicist can do for them all the way to the large brand wanting to solidify customer loyalty and expand into different markets.

My company is known for gaining our clients an audience that sticks with them from beginning to end. We work strategically to where a client can see the growth of their audience and engagement in their respective field. We are successful in acquiring sponsorships and partnerships that allow our clients to cross promote and gain a new audience as well.

One of our biggest clients is the BeatsxBeers Lifestyle brand. BeatsxBeers is a nationwide music tour, event curation, and music marketing brand. Their flagship stage at SXSW Music Festival has been named one of the “Best Festivals in Texas” by Travel Mag and it’s creator Brandon Corder has been placed in the National Advertising Association Hall of Achievement for all of the work that he has done with the brand.

I have the honor of being the press and media manager for the Inaugural Black Media Honors This event is celebrating African-American pioneers in the media and press space. It’s the first event of its kind and caliber, so to be a part of it is an honor. I’m currently assisting with the expansion of Buy Black, one of the largest platforms for networking and mentorship connection of black-owned businesses. I love working with clients who are unapologetic about telling their stories and really want to make a difference with it rather than just being seen.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m excited about the expansion of my company. I am looking to hire a jr publicist that can assist with accounts and also bring in their own clients and I assist if need be. I’m looking to begin the journey to gaining my sports agent license and also work in the arena of sports PR. Also, outside of PR I’m starting a business in online retail and learning about real. Owning my own business has given me the freedom to try a lot of different avenues and streams of income. It’s just about finding which things are really important to you and seeing them through.
