Meet Marsha Rivera of Over The Moon Massage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marsha Rivera.

Marsha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It’s amazing really how a traumatic experience can lead you to your purpose. Such was the case for me. I was 27 years old and had recently experienced a miscarriage. I was devastated and had a hard time not just emotionally, but physically. I ended up getting an infection and as a result, was put on several antibiotics, none of which my body responded well to.

After weeks of being sensitive to touch and suffering from what felt like inconsolable pain, my doctor recommended that I get a massage. I started out with three massages a week, then went to two massages a week, then one a week. And I felt better. I could touch my skin. I felt alive. Restored. I felt good. And I knew then that I wanted to provide that same feeling to other people.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have had moments of transition for sure where it got a little bumpy for stretches of time, but nothing that would deter me from my desire to help people feel good through massage. Those stretches revealed more of me to me and helped me to trust my gift, my intuition, and to make better and more sound business choices. I recall a time when I worked as a Massage Mentor where I trained the new employees on how to give spa massages.

I loved working with them, and at the time, it seemed like the ideal position. Then my counterpart, who handled the managerial responsibilities, left the company and left me with the task of managing and training. I felt conflicted: I went from solely educating and helping the employees become better masseuses to becoming a disciplinarian as well. That didn’t feel good.

I just wanted to teach and focus on the art of massage, yet with the change at my job, I couldn’t focus completely on what I loved. I knew I didn’t want to stay in that position much longer and thankfully, another opportunity presented itself. That seems to be my journey: When one door is about to close, another one always opens… sometimes without much effort on my part.

Over The Moon Massage – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Over the Moon Massage is my company and I specialize in Ashiatsu DeepFeet Bar Therapy. Ashiatsu is a deep tissue massage without the sharpness of a traditional deep tissue massage.

Ashiatsu is deep and smooth; the pressure is evenly distributed. Whereas traditional deep-tissue massage is more fiery and pointed, Ashiatsu is more of a flow, like water. I also do cupping, which helps to loosen the tissue and helps to increase the circulatory and lymphatic flow.

I am most proud of my gift to help people heal and rebalance, and to restore wellness. Our health is our wealth, and to know that I contribute to my clients’ richness in this way is humbling and empowering.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Having return clients helps me feel successful. It lets me know that I’m doing something right and I’m achieving my goal of helping my clients feel safe, seen, heard, appreciated, respected, and loved. I have clients who I’ve had for almost ten years, and to me, that speaks volumes. I get to grow with them on their journey to wellness, and this is sacred to me.

Some of my clients refuse to see anyone else, and it’s because we’ve built a bond that could only be established with time, consistency, genuine care, and respect. In a field where there are so many options, to have that kind of longevity and loyalty says something. And to me, that is success.
