Meet Markus Shields

Today we’d like to introduce you to Markus Shields.

Markus, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began dancing when I was 18. The toughest part wasn’t learning too though. It was getting over the small-minded ridicule. People questioning my sexuality and telling me I was too old to find success in dance. The next year I was already teaching and choreographing and winning competitions on a national level!

Once I moved to LA, things really started to take off! I began to work with artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Will Smith, Chayanne (a Latin Superstar) and so many more. I was the lead in commercials for JW Marriott and Amtrak and choreographed a commercial for eBay as well as dance on Lip Sync Battle, the Grammys, AMAs and so many more amazing events.

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting dance a little older ultimately lead me to move to LA at an older age too. Being that I was an established choreographer in my hometown, Grand Rapids, MI an unexpected difficulty was that I had to be a dancer again. I thought I’d be able to show my resume to agencies and be viewed as a choreographer. I adjusted, and I began to thrive.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I feel the thing that sets me apart is my vision. During this time (pandemic) I’ve had so much downtime and I’ve allowed myself to create some visual masterpieces. Some extremely unique choreography concepts new to the dance world.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the dance world reviving and thriving again. The entire arts industry will be moving again and I think TikTok will be more of an advocate for real dance than the simple stuff it’s been known for. A new generation of choreographers and dancers will be ushered in bringing about more innovation. Visuals and MVs are going to be created with more of a uniqueness and the music industry will open itself up to top what’s been done.
