Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Holzum.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from St. Louis, MO went to school there and majored in Theatre with minors in Philosophy and Legal Studies. Through the commercials, films, and plays I did while in St. Louis, all of those experiences funneled me towards the oh so interesting city of angels. As I looked for acting work and representation, I happened to take a free yoga class, and I was totally hooked. I did training and started teaching immediately.
Accend came out of noticing a significant lack of gradient scaling training for all demographics (what I mean by that is, you get thrown into some class without knowing what you, personally, should or should not do based on your body’s prerequisites and goals.) I wanted to launch something that would help professional athletes be able to take care of themselves without having to pay oodles of cash and also something that my grandma could easily progress and succeed with!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Good gravy, no. Every difficulty you could think of came into play. LA is great, but it is a challenging place, especially the first two years or so. Wasted time, expenses, lack of true goal or identity… all of those things were thrown up to block forward progress. Once I started to clarify for myself what actually made me happy (alleviating others’ pain) finally roads started to open up and make sense again.
Accend Training Solutions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As an athlete, mover, and human, I’ve been involved in so many different sports, exercise styles & classes, fads, nutrition ideas… it was honestly all kind of confusing and this is coming from someone who was choosing to participate in these fields actively. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like for the normal person who just wants to live longer without pain and take care of themselves.
So, Accend recognizes its clients as individuals, with specific goals and barriers. We pull from the best of the nutrition, mobility, and strength worlds to create programs and accountability systems that create lasting, significant change. No hopping off and on the bandwagon, no being too overwhelmed. We tell you exactly what and how and, most importantly, why you are going to do what’s on the program.
We bend and flow depending on what changes the client is needing, but still holding strong to the original goals. We’re different because we don’t believe there is one perfect path. The only thing that matters is ‘are you getting where you want to go.’ And if that’s not happening, then something needs to change, and we don’t really care what field we pull from to make that happen for our client.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The days of recognition. I’ll meet up with a client, and they’ll say “You know what? This past week, I had zero pain in my hip (or whatever it is)” and I’m like hell yes. That’s why I’m doing what I’m doing.
