Meet Marina Stokes of Be The Light Sis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Stokes.

Marina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My childhood was filled with trauma, abuse, and poverty. I experienced a lot of hardships but I was determined to overcome them. A determined young woman, I made a list and checked everything off one by one. I went to college, became a member of The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, INC, graduated with my Industrial Engineering and Supply Chain Management Degree, and began my career as a Management Engineer in the United States Air Force. I felt so good about my accomplishments but still empty inside. Soon after my husband deployed, I found myself fighting demons from my childhood. I decided to go to counseling and seek healing. I finally found myself and my purpose. I realized there was purpose in my pain and I wanted to help empower other women like me. Therefore, I created my business Be The Light Sis.

I make candles that have names such as “self-care”, “peace”, and “girls night” to remind them to have moments of my time. I also host events for women that need support. Some of my events include “Step in Mama’s” which is a support event for mothers in a blended family. Some of my events are partnered with my own friends giving them a platform to encourage their own purpose and talents. My goal is to empower women and encourage women to find their own purpose and rise above their own pain! The world can be such a dark place at time especially during a pandemic, but I know there is a light in all of us that can help brighten up the world. I will continue to show up and be a light so that I can spark the light in someone else through Be The Light Sis!

Has it been a smooth road?
I experienced several struggles. I was born by a single teenage mom. She had her own struggles with mental health. She did the best she could despite her own obstacles but it still creates an unsafe environment for me. We lived in poverty, I was sexually assaulted several times and tossed around from home to home. I didn’t know who my father was and when I finally met him, I felt like an adopted child in my own family. I had several toxic relationships as a product of a toxic childhood. I also struggled with health obstacles, but all of it didn’t stop my determination to become healthy mind, body, and soul and then share that with others!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My main product is the soy candles! So many people tell me they love how they don’t even need to light the candles because the fragrance fills up the room when opening the lid. They tell me they are long-lasting and therapeutic. That brings me joy because I intentionally want the candles to bring them an oasis experience. I want it to be a self-care moment that encourages mental health and mindfulness. My signature line is named; love, joy, peace, kindness, gentleness, mercy, self-care, goodness, grace, and faithfulness. My candles are for everyone but my focus is women’s empowerment. I also sell other merchandise with empowering messages for women of all walks of life. I also host events that support women in different experiences. I have single mom events, blended family events, working moms club, girls night which is a series of events that promote women coming together for an unwind session.

During the girl’s night event (we meet virtually right now) to listen to a local artist sing live, or we watch an aspiring woman chef teach us how to cook a vegan meal. All these events promote my friend’s gifts and talents to push them into their purpose as well. This summer, I made a line of candles to support the events. I named that line of candles summer sister with the scents; beach babe, girls night, island girl, besties brunch, and spa day. I also have a line of fall candles coming out Sept 13, Winter Candles coming out Dec 1, and New Year Candles Jan 1! My business is known for empowering women through events catered to women and candles that are designed to be utilized a self-care tool to promote mental health.
