Meet Mariela and Jacob Garza of Social Scenes Photobooth in Fullerton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariela and Jacob Garza.

Mariela and Jacob, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Very shortly after giving birth to our third child, my husband approached me about wanting to start a home-based business that allowed me to spend more time with our kids while also using my creativity. Unknowingly, he had been researching the photo booth industry and felt it was the perfect fit for us. We love to entertain and be social, so why not mix the two into something that we know we’d love. He’s more business-oriented while I love to be creative, so we felt this would be the perfect fit and working together would provide the balance we needed.

We knew we wanted to create a brand more than a company which has been the most challenging yet rewarding. It’s created many sleepless nights of preparation and long weekends filled with events but through it all, every single minute has been worth it. Most importantly, without the support of our family, we wouldn’t be anywhere close to where we are today. Our constant reminder of motivation remains our three kids, Bella 11, Kaleb 4 and Havana 2.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been “peaches and rainbows”, which is how my husband likes to put it, but it’s been rewarding in the end. We’ve have some seriously long nights and endless hours of creative design and brainstorming, but we’re glad to say that these are things that our clients will never know because our main goal is to always provide a flawless experience. On a laughing note, I’m pretty sure I’ve even given my husband a “2 week notice” before an event even starts only to realize I’m part-owner of the business and can’t quick on myself or my husband. We love to laugh about these moments because we understand it’s made us who we are. Sometimes it really pains us to care about every small detail but reality is, we really do care and want our clients to receive the very best possible.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Social Scenes Photobooth story. Tell us more about the business.
We provide modern and upscale photo booth experiences for all sizes of events ranging from weddings to corporate gatherings. Our style and presentation remain one of our top priorities. For that, our focus on keeping a very clean and consistent style to match our booths is extremely important and has been influential to creating our brand. We want to provide an experience for our clients rather than just a photo.

When it comes to props, our prop selection is definitely not the typical photo booth setup. We choose to invest in higher-end items and tailor our props to each client and their event. We want to make that great first impression when a guest walks up and leave them with a lasting memory from the experience.

Not only do we offer customizations in our photo booths, we also offer customizations to our props and backdrops to match. In reality, the requests from our clients also sparked the idea of expanding our business. We’ve had so many requests specifically for custom balloons installs, that we felt it was the perfect time to launch Social Pop Balloons (IG: @socialpop_).

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Photo booth experiences are definitely not going away anytime soon but with the recent COVID-19 pandemic, it’s very likely there will be adjustments required. Most notably are props. Being that it’s so new for everyone, we’re continuing to explore how we can maintain the same experience while adjusting to these circumstances. We think it’s fair to say, when it’s all said and done, everyone is going to be more eager than ever to have celebrations and that’s where Social Scenes Photobooth and Social Pop Balloons come into play. No matter the timing, celebrations big or small will always continue.

Staying ahead of trends is always a challenge but it’s also always on our mind. One area we’ve been exploring and plan to include are 360 booths and digital props. 360 booths definitely bring that upscale, haute couture, Hollywood like feel everyone wants to experience. With the power of social media, it’s all about filters, GIFs, boomerangs, etc. So it’s important that we remain relevant to what our clients ask for.
