Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Hilliard.
Mariah, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am from Newark, DE and I am 28 years old. I have been dancing and training since I was young. Although, I never thought I would go full time and pursue it as a career. But I did and I’m so thankful! I did not decide to take dance seriously until I went to college. While in college, I studied accounting as a back up and although I loved it too, I knew it wasn’t my passion. So, after I graduated, I moved to Los Angeles and put all my time and energy into the industry and perfecting my craft. It’s been nothing but blessings since. I got my first dance job in 2016/17, a year after had been in California. After that it was Coachella, Tours and more.
Has it been a smooth road?
No way! I don’t think anything worth doing is a smooth road. I have been through hell and back. I love every minute of it because it made me who I am. There has been failures and successes. Each opportunity you face different obstacles. Some are smooth sailing and some not so much. Examples such as appearance, weight, height, dance ability, friends, relationships and more. It’s always been my understanding that sometimes you have to go through the struggle to see the beauty in it.
Please tell us about your work.
Mariah Jasmine is my brand. I am a dancer and business owner. I am trained in modern, jazz, ballet, hip hop and heels. My work consists of live stage performances, tours, music videos, movies and tv shows. I am most proud of my drive and accomplishments. I also own a clothing line focused on fitness and dance attire called Maräj. This clothing line is my baby. It was created to enhance the beauty in every body type in the world.
I believe what sets me apart from others is my passion and individuality. My key is I never set an END GOAL. I always push for more and more. I push to encourage people with my dancing and with my clothing. I want everyone to feel the way i do about dance whether they are watching me dance, dancing with me or dancing in my clothing.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The City of LA! What I love most is that you have the opportunity to become anything you want especially for me because I come from not only a small town but a small state. I love the perfect sunny days, the cozy nights and the endless adventures it brings. What I like least about LA is the traffic. I know that sounds cliché but it’s so true. If I had to choose another dislike, I would say the need to fit in. I stand for not fitting in and creating and being YOU!
