Meet Maria Jose Govea of Thesupermaniak

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Jose Govea.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Maria Jose. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m born and raised in Venezuela. During my late teens, I got into the local rave scene in Caracas and it changed my life. I decided to move to Toronto to DJ and study film. I fell in love with the city so I stayed there, and I started to photograph the electronic music scene I was a part of. That kickstarted a career as a music and portrait photographer, and it led me to eventually, and painfully, give up djing to focus on photos 100%. I’m very lucky to have gone on tour with people like Skrillex, Diplo, Arcade Fire, A-Trak and Bomba Estéreo. I’ve photographed many amazing musicians, bands, artists and entertainers. I’ve also been working with Red Bull for the past seven years, which has given me access to incredible experiences to photograph. I relocated to Los Angeles 3 years ago to continue growing and I love it here. I’m insanely passionate about my craft and even though I’ve been doing it for a while, I feel like I’m just getting started.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Certainly not smooth, but definitely exciting! One of the biggest challenges has been to move to a different country twice in order to push things forward. Visas are a nightmare!

Please tell us about Thesupermaniak.
People tell me they love the energy in my images, which makes me so happy, because that’s something nobody can teach you how to capture; it sort of has to come from you. I think this Hunter S Thompson quote explains who I am as a person and as a photographer better than I could ever explain it myself: “Music has always been a matter of Energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed Fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Fearlessness and a hint of charisma!
