Meet Margie Ocdamia of OMG Ocdamia Music Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Margie Ocdamia.

Margie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My husband is a musician. He has been playing the cello for over 35 years. He used to play in a number of orchestras based in Southern California and was also a cruise ship musician at Holland America before he immigrated to the US.

I would often join him for his “music gigs,” often orchestra rehearsals and tours, and I easily became friends with the musicians in the community. I saw their overwhelming passion for music, but I also became fully aware of how some of them struggle financially. As some of you may know, orchestra gigs do not pay much. A full-time musician may find it difficult to generate a stable income from these gigs.

Most musicians spend most of their lives honing their craft. Some even get advanced degrees in music. I felt that they needed to get more opportunities given their credentials and expertise, so I started a company that focused on helping clients find talented musicians to play at their events.

We started with one string trio in 2008 and fast-forward to ten years later, we have over 100 musicians. We cover the Southern California area and can accept up to ten events per day. We have talented solo musicians (violin, cello, piano, harp, guitar, saxophone & flute), duets, trios, string quartets, a live band, and emcees.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been far from smooth. When I started this business, I had no idea how difficult it would be. There were plenty of challenges along the way, but I am glad that our pool of musicians have gotten bigger. We have significantly grown since we started, but our greatest concern is to how to continuously and consistently provide gigs to our musicians. I see their need of a steady income because well, at the end of the day we all have bills to pay. In this industry there are peak and off-peak seasons, so one of the big challenges is how to sustain the bookings during off-peak seasons.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Ocdamia Music Group has been providing beautiful, quality music to weddings and events for ten years. We have talented musicians, most of them with a graduate degree in music, who can play any genre of our clients’ liking – be it classical, contemporary, jazz, etc. We offer a variety of music and entertainment from solos, groups, live bands, DJs/Emcees, to Baraat Bands.

We also have comedians, magicians, and other entertainment available. Currently, there are 1000+ songs in our playlist (constantly updated) and we have an in-house arranger in case our clients’ preferred songs are not in our repertoire. We have played music at multi-cultural events, taking time to learn the music of different cultures and traditions.

One of the qualities that we take pride in is our commitment to providing not just beautiful music but also professional and reliable service. We are very attentive to our clients’ needs and make sure that they are happy with the music and service we provide.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in a small town in the Philippines where we had limited access to services, entertainment, activities, etc. It was a town dedicated to farming, mostly, and we lived a rather simple life. I remember having to walk to school where it would rain most of the time. Looking back, everything was so different then.

I guess the challenges I faced when I was young helped me get to where I am today. I would describe myself as a determined and goal-oriented person. I do not give up easily on what I have started on, but at the same time, I am very practical.

Honestly, building my own business was a difficult process, but I was highly motivated to succeed. I think my motivation comes from the very reason why I started this business: to help deserving musicians find more opportunities and to help people gain access to amazing talent.
