Meet Marcus Brown of Prolyphik1 Photos in Mid-Wilshire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Brown.

Marcus, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in the Inland Empire (Fontana stand up!). I am a former athlete turned photographer & creative entrepreneur determined to blend my passion for business and creative arts.

I first picked up a camera in 2006 because I wanted to record himself making beats to share on social media. After starting college at Cal State Fullerton in 2008, I quickly became known as the campus go-to photographer and videographer for all things nightlife and campus events.

Before entering college, my friends and I started a creative collective called No Kurfew which focuses on nurturing and collaborating with artists from a variety of artistic genres including music, dance, photography, fashion, cinematography and more. Through No Kurfew, my team and I have worked with brands and public figures such as Nestle (United Kingdom), Robert Wayne Footwear, Chris Brown, Marilyn Manson, Kevin McCall, and more.

Today, I continue to run No Kurfew with my team executing creative concept projects and brand collaborations while with Prolyphik1 Photos, I specialize in Portrait, Product, and Real Estate photography.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Just like many of my creative peers, I too, have dealt with imposter syndrome and anxiety.

Being the oldest of my siblings and was on track with doing some “firsts” such as graduating from a 4-year university, etc. I was on the traditional career plan that has been taught to our generation time and time again. In doing so, in 2016, I up and moved to London, to pursue my Master’s Degree in International Marketing and Brand Management (which happened to be one of the best decisions in my life). I have never traveled outside of the country before, so making such a move was definitely not smooth.

When I moved back in 2017 with my Masters, I was determined to get a job and thrive in the 9-to-5 world that everyone says is so great. After working full time for a few years, I recently transitioned out of the traditional 9-to-5 workforce and have been enjoying it ever since. My photography has improved, and I have been able to really flex my creative muscles rather than sitting at a desk, and later sitting hours in traffic on my way home.

Don’t get me wrong transitioning into a full-time creative/freelancer was liberating for me, but at the same time, you do have those rough patches. Overall it has been a journey that has been well worth it because I am in control of my time (which is our most precious asset).

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Prolyphik1 Photos story. Tell us more about the business.
My company is called Prolyphik1 Photos, where we specialize in portrait, product, and real estate photography. These particular categories are personal passions of mine within photography because I enjoy

1. Capturing people and highlighting their unique features.
2. Combining my knowledge of business strategy and photography to effectively produce product & real estate assets that align with my client’s objectives.

I am most proud of is the fact that I have the support of my fellow No Kurfew members. This is what also sets Prolyphik1 Photos apart is because I have direct access to a community of creative artists who bring additional value through innovative services to clients who typically do not frequent creative/artistic spaces. In turn, I can expose artists to new business sectors, help them diversify their portfolio, and earn money to reinvest into their own projects.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I personally do not believe in good or bad luck. I simply have faith that God has a plan for my life, and I have the free will to decide if I want to walk in alignment His plan and manifest my purpose. My most memorable experiences and opportunities personally and business-wise did not come as a result of me or my business being “the most qualified.” The chances that we get or miss out on are in either in alignment with your purpose, or they simply are not.
