Meet Marcie McGovern of ANGELEI™ in Pacific Palisades

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcie McGovern.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in Chicago and began modeling, dancing and figure skating at five years old. I grew up in a very talented family of professional dancers and singers. My mother was in the movie “Singing in the Rain” and I remember the first time I saw the movie, I was mesmerized not only by the dancing but the beautiful costumes! Debbie Reynolds in her slicker and galoshes in the title song, and
Cyd Charisse in her stunning green dress and shoes…every glamorous detail of the movie was perfection!

After I graduated from Indiana University with a B.A. in Design and a B.A. in Film, I spent many hours designing costumes and shoes for my friends. My friends would ask me to design shoes that could not be found in a store, as so many shoes all looked the same, they wanted to be seen in “stand out” shoes no one else wore! I created them out of leftover fabric my mom would give me from some of my old skating or dance costumes and began designing for prominent women in Chicago.

I went on to win over 13 industry awards including “Designer of the Year” designing for several Fortune 500 Companies, but quickly realized it was designing for fashion, specifically shoes, where my true passion was recognized. I was recruited to design for 2 films by a dear friend who was a top Special Effects Coordinator and It was here that I turned the hundreds of hours of designs into actual prototypes.

At that point, I had a daughter who passed away, so it was no longer just about fashion, but more importantly about giving back to children. So, I decided to take my love of shoes and my designs and create a woman-owned company that would not only produce top-quality Italian women’s footwear but also be a platform with a loud voice for the equality of women in fashion and the ability to help children in need.

ANGELEI™ was launched in 2020! It is a brand that celebrates diversity in technique of designs and in representation of the brand. The hallmark of ANGELEI’s™ designs includes sculptural laser cut shapes, gorgeous colors and fabrics, and handcrafted stunning details. Although the brand exudes top-quality Italian craftsmanship, the brand has managed to remain sustainable with our beautiful limited-edition lines, low quantities and recycled packaging. ANGELEI™’s one-of-a-kind designs and “white glove” service may win fans, but the brand never loses sight of our real mission…giving back through extraordinary collaborations, partnered charities and providing an inclusive platform for women around the world!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Oh gosh, where do I start…

– Designs that look amazing on paper that don’t necessarily transfer to 3-d prototypes

– Fabrics/Accessories that are discontinued

But probably the most challenging has been finding an incredible team. The business is now built from an amazing creative team excited to work together, fostering an environment that is genuine, successful and happy!

ANGELEI™ – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
ANGELEI™ is a story that started with a dream to create “Museum-Worthy Footwear”, yet really live in a woman’s life. We have spent years listening to intimate desires and emotions of women which has formed the bedrock upon which our company is built and has allowed us to create wearable art that is sexy and comfortable.

Our vision is to re-imagine footwear as a unique expression rather than as a “trend”, eliminate excess and change the lives of the extraordinary children ANGELEI™ has pledged to give back through the charities it supports.

At ANGELEI™, we understand that for our shoes to be not only outstanding and unique but true works of art, we must and are so proud to seek inspiration for our designs through collaborations with those in the Art, Film and Dance communities.

One of our incredible new collaborations is the “Walk the Walk” Campaign. ANGELEI ™ cast an “at home” editorial facetime photo shoot with renowned fashion photographer, Paul Francis McGugan. Paul’s photographs can be seen in a number of fashion magazines but most recently he has pivoted, along with the rest of the top fashion community, to develop an incredible new way of shooting virtually. He is now one of the top “go to” photographers for facetime/iphone professional photoshoots.

The “Walk the Walk” project is an artistic collaboration between ANGELEI™ and Paul Francis McGugan, showcasing both the beauty of the ANGELEI™ brand and the beauty of the diverse models chosen to participate in the Campaign. Each model tells her own unique background story while modeling ANGELEI™ and is beautifully exhibited through Paul’s stunning photography! Open to all ethnicities, gender identities, sexualities, and body types.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as living my true purpose and having a positive impact on the lives of children. I am also proud to have developed a woman-owned company where all women are equally represented.
