Today we’d like to introduce you to Malena Lloyd.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Having just graduated from grad school with an M.F.A. in Screenwriting, I had expressed interest in moving to Los Angeles but didn’t have any solid plans yet. I hadn’t even considered what the next step in my writing career would be or where it would involve me moving to. A friend of mine, who I attended grad school with, texted me asking if I would like to move to LA with her. A matter of weeks later, I was saying goodbye to my friends and driving from New York to LA.
After settling in, I found myself with a social media internship at a production company with the hope that it could lead me to a film-based job at the company (that clearly didn’t happen). I decided to pursue other social media jobs while I worked on my writing and my following job was the one that leads me to where I am. I applied for a social media position at a shoe company and was interviewed by someone from HR, and the head of the Social Media Department, Sarah. Sarah started me that week, threw me right into the thick of it all, and a few weeks later asked me if I’d like to be her business partner in developing a social media marketing company. This was a point in my life where I decided to say “yes” to any opportunity that came my way…so I said yes. Here we are, two years later, a thriving business! I’m still writing and am actively involved in film projects with some talented friends, and hope to ultimately make that my career.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The world of owning a business is never a smooth road. I think one of the largest issues we’ve faced is people not taking us and our knowledge seriously because we’re a woman-owned company. I’ve also noticed shocked reactions when we tell people we own the company. As exhausting as that is sometimes, we don’t let the bumps in the road deter us.
Social Light – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Social Light is a boutique social media marketing company in Los Angeles. Our mission is to provide individual and specialized attention to our clients to successfully broaden their audience and increase engagement. We do everything from social media (posting and scheduling content, setting up video and photoshoots, creating logos and brand packages, etc.), to advertising (email marketing, social media growth, running ads, boosted posts, developing marketing campaigns), to single and music video releases for artists. What sets us apart is that we’re a one-stop-shop marketing company. We’re dedicated to our clients and helping them find success and I’m proud that we’re relentless in this.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proud moment of owning Social Light is when we got company health insurance! It may seem like a small victory but we have a lot of small goals and stepping stones for the company and this was one of them. It’s sometimes hard to see that your business is growing, and then you reach one of your goals and look back at all the work it took to get there and you can finally stop holding your breath for a moment (and finally take a lunch break).
