Today we’d like to introduce you to Malaika Frazier.
Malaika, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a hairstylist with over ten years of experience in the industry. I’m a single mother of two boys originally from Baltimore me & have been in LA for three years. I was pretty successful on the east coast but decided to take a leap of faith and move the boys and I to LA. I wanted to be able to work behind the chair and on set and not have to leave my boys to do so. I dc opened a salon space one year after being here in LA with my business partner Angela Stevens.
I’ve grown a lot since arriving in LA and now we are adding a walk-in retail space to our brand “The Hair Show Room” in West Hollywood as well. Things have been difficult at times, trying to be authentic and prove yourself her in a place where everyone is not as transparent, but I am very grateful. When I moved, I lost everything even though I thought I was prepared. I lost friends, money, where the boys and I would live, etc., (basically every you could think of) but faith always wins. My boys are great. My hearts full, and my business is for everyone growing, so I’m grateful.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it been bumpy, lol! I lost everything when I moved and couldn’t go back because I had no money for my sons and I to get there! Lol! So I had to strap up my boots and work. I’ve been told No from agencies, lost all my money, products stolen from my inventory, broke my hand that I use to work with. I mean you name it, it’s happened. But there is so much more good that has taken place those big obstacles didn’t stand a chance against my faith.
Please tell us about Rejuvagrow Hair Care.
I am the hair artist that owns Rejuvagrow Hair Care. A brand whose base is the health of your hair. We have a hair oil & drinking tea that restores your scalps ph and promotes overall health. In this brand, we also encompass ethically sourced hair extensions which all are now available in the extension of my brand “The Hair Showroom”. With all of that, I’m fortunate to work outside of the salon as well with industry artists (actors & musicians & executives of tech) freelancing and doing editorial work.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My twin sister Melise, doing my hair, because I was horrible at it and a tomboy. I actually started doing hair because she was so good at it, I had to be good at it too.
