Today we’d like to introduce you to Madiha Mahmood.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Madiha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a little kid, I used to watch my sister practice henna during our summer break. At that time, I was not interested in Henna. When I moved to US in 2007, I wasn’t able to locate any henna artist near me so I just grabbed a cone and started drawing on myself and my family. Slowly I started to do it on my friends and other family friends. I even took couple of painting and drawing classes but Henna was the only thing that I enjoyed. Fast forward to 2017, someone asked me to do bridal henna and it took me around 8 hours to do it, and to my surprise, I didn’t mind spending so much time doing it. I enjoyed every minute of it.
And it began from there…. 🙂
Has it been a smooth road?
Mostly things have been pretty smooth. My family has been very cooperative, supportive and encouraging.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
As I started to look more into henna on a serious level and thought about sharing my talent with the world, I learned about how bad those chemical cones are, that you get from Indian/Pakistani stores and some craft stores they sell those as “Henna Kits”. A lot of extra stuff is added to henna to increase shelf life (like hair dye, gasoline, etc.) which are very harmful to your skin.
I dug deep into it and found and tested recipes for 100% Natural Henna with Organic Recipe. I experimented with consistency and ingredients and different suppliers of Henna Powder from India and Pakistan until I found the perfect mix of all with results in amazing stain for my clients.
The most important thing to me was to offer the best staining, 100% natural henna. Once I achieved that, I got insurance for my henna just to make sure my clients are protected and taken care of, just in case they are allergic to lemon juice or any essential oils. On my booking form, I have a specific area where I ask for allergies so I can customize the Henna Paste for each client.
I hand mix my own henna every week before my appointments. Natural henna only consists of few basic ingredients such as: Henna Powder (from trusted source), Organic Lemon Juice, Essential Oil (I prefer Lavender, Eucalyptus, Cajeput and Tee Tree) and Sugar (optional).
Now I specialize in Bridal Henna and offer different level of Bridal intricacy design options. and also enjoy doing henna at events/parties. I almost post all my work pictures on my Instagram and also have a website from where I process all bookings and inquiries. Number of clients increase each passing year, and I get to meet so many wonderful people and hear their stories and just be around all the fun of wedding preparations.
I take pride in offering Natural Henna and also the customer service that I provide. I have a professional website/booking process and contract. I also provide detailed after care instructions to clients and also some guides specifically for Brides for before their henna application.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think California is pretty diverse and I appreciate all kinds of ethnicity/race/gender etc. that are interested in this form of art. I have not had any struggles in getting clients since the start of my business.
