Meet Lynette Ranaudo of More Than Just Sprinkles in San Bernardino County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynette Ranaudo.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
About a decade ago, I worked outside the home full-time in a job that was so stressful, I ended up in the hospital with symptoms of a heart attack at 27 years old. Definitely not how anyone wants to live their life but I was a mom to three children and doing what I could to make ends meet. A drastic change was needed so with the support of my husband, I started staying home with our children and baking for others. What began as a joyful endeavor actually saved my life. I was able to completely rid myself of anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medication by being in the kitchen. I no longer had medical problems and here I was, bringing joy to others through yummy goodness! I continued to bake on and off over the years but never really transformed it into a full business. Fast forward to March of 2019, I decided to start offering custom sugar cookies to locals in my area. I created my Facebook and Instagram pages under the name “More Than Just Sprinkles,” and I could have never dreamed what would become of it! I began uploading videos of how I make each cookie and photos of the finished products and quickly gained a following. I created friendships throughout the cookie community and truly jumped in with both feet, no looking back.

Has it been a smooth road?
Over the course of this past year and a half, I’ve taken cookie classes from other cookiers. I love supporting others in that way, but of course, it’s always helpful to learn new techniques, especially in areas I knew I was lacking. It definitely hasn’t come without its challenges. Trial and error on my recipe, trying not to bleed colors when icing, perfecting royal icing so that it doesn’t just spill off the cookie! There is so much that goes into the whole process, I think a lot of people would be surprised to see it all from start to finish. It generally takes me a good 3-4 days to complete an order, but thankfully, sugar cookies stay fresh when covered. This is why I like to show the video process on my social media platforms. I always include the time it takes to make each cookie so they know cookies are “more than just sprinkles”. Hence my business name!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the More Than Just Sprinkles story. Tell us more about the business.
More Than Just Sprinkles began as a side venture to let my creative ideas out. I simply offered St. Patrick’s shamrock cookies in March of 2019 and the reception was so well, I kept moving forward. I began to specialize in custom sugar cookies for any occasion or event and holiday pre-sales. My recipe is a pure vanilla bean sugar cookie with no nuts or nut extracts. I aim to have the softest cookie that tastes as good as it looks! At first, clients would text message or direct message me with order requests and that quickly became overwhelming. I created a website through Shopify which was probably one of the most helpful tools I’ve used to date. I offer all of my pre-sales and orders through there which is perfect for tracking sales, data, and client information.

I also truly believe in supporting small business so majority of the products I use are just that. I prefer to purchase cookie cutters from super talented Etsy shops that are hand-designed and created with a 3d printer. I purchase all of my edible glitters, paint dusts, and icing colors from a family-owned business, The Sugar Art, in Texas. It’s so important to me to support other small businesses and I’ve already created close relationships with a lot of them. We’re a close cookie community and I’ll always do whatever I can to help someone else before I promote my own business.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
My dream is to grow this business into a full-time venture. I currently work full-time from home so to say my schedule as a mom, wife, employee, and entrepreneur is chaotic, is an understatement. I’m truly blessed to have the income of working full-time and having my side business, but I ultimately want to support my family solely off something I love to do and am passionate about. I have a small limit on how many orders I can take per week and I would love to expand that. If this can be my main focus, that is completely attainable. Once COVID is over, I’ll be offering decorating classes from my home and sharing my love of “all things cookie” with others in person!

I’ve recently added custom tumblers to my inventory and I’m loving the outlet and customer base it is bringing me. Because I can ship tumblers (but not cookies – Cottage Food Law in California does not permit shipping), I’ve expanded my business around the country. Connecting with others outside my local area has brought me such happiness! I also hope to inspire others with my story. Baking and focusing in on creative details brought me out of a very dark place. If you’re passionate about something, you can truly carve out a path that might be overwhelming, but beautiful and magical and well worth the journey!

  • My custom cookies start at $36 per dozen and go up from there depending on size and complexity of design.
