Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyka Gozon.
Hi Lyka, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in the little town of Malabon in the Philippines and I attended college at the University of Santo Tomas where I majored in Communication Arts, at the time, I was on my way to be an Events and Public Relations professional. However, towards the end of 2011 after ending a really toxic relationship, I decided the best way to move on was to join my family and fly to the US. I never really thought about photography as a career because I have always wanted to be in PR. But life happens! When I moved here, I told myself that I wouldn’t take a job that doesn’t have anything to do with my major, so I ended up being a photographer at Lifetouch Studios at the JCPenney stores. That’s where I found my knack for photography and my love for Children and Family photography! After three years of working there and an encounter with a very rude customer, I decided that I could do this photography thing on my own and have more loving and appreciative clients! So around 2015-2016, I started to offer my photography services to friends and family. I didn’t even know how to edit properly back then! I got to meet a bunch of more seasoned photographers along the way and I got the chance to learn more techniques and styles from them! I definitely wouldn’t be where I am now if it hadn’t been for those mentors!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
OH MY GOD, NO. I struggled a lot with self-confidence and comparison. I would look at all these wonderful and amazing photographers and I would compare myself and my photos with theirs, and I would feel awful! I always felt like whatever I did was not enough or that I simply suck! Coming from a different country didn’t help as well. When I started out, my community was very small so I didn’t have a lot of connections. No one really knew who I was. I struggled with getting my own laptop and camera as well!
We’ve been impressed with Lyks! Creatives, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Lyks! Creatives is a photography service that specializes in Children and Family photography as well as Lifestyle Branding photography! I can confidently say that I have sooooo much patience when working with little ones, I truly try to connect and get down on their level so I can capture them in their element! I know that a lot of parents love good old-fashioned family portraits, and they’re not wrong to like those posed photos. However, through the years that I’ve worked with kids and families, I realized that the best photos to look back to are the ones that are unposed and raw. That’s why I offer a “BITS-YOU-MISS SESSION”. It’s like a documentary-style session where I capture a family’s day-to-day moments, no posing, no directing. All the little details, quirks, and seemingly mundane moments, captured- so they can look back at it after 10, 20, 30 years and see what life really looked like! As far as Lifestyle branding goes, I work with a lot of Women-Owned businesses! Most are actually Filipinas like myself! My goal is to partner with these women and to put the visual aspect of their business to life through photos and videos!
