Meet Lydia Tolman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lydia Tolman.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up and lived most my life in Switzerland.
As a late teen, I started my Journey as a photographer and eventually attended the Art-School Berne, from where I received my degree as a Photographer in 2000. Since then, Photography has always been part of my life, even though all my moves from Switzerland to Germany (where I met my Husband) all the way to the USA, California to be specific, where my Husband grew up.These days, we’re just “the average family”, with three kids, a dog, a house, and a fondness for travel and the outdoors.
I rarely sleep well, but mostly live well. So, I guess I can’t complain 😉

Please tell us about your art.
There hasn’t been a time where I wasn’t obsessed with People. I guess it’s also called “being social” LoL. It’s really quiet an experience when you get to show people a picture of how you view them, and their families and their lives. I guess that’s why I continue to photograph Families, and Newborns, Couples and Baby bellies. I can truly say that I love people and enjoy experiencing their lives for just one hour or so.
Also, laughs. I see the beauty in perfect pictures, but I’d much rather just capture the laughs. And the split seconds of connections that feel just so raw. Yeah, I guess that’s it, I love the real, the raw!

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
It is a beautiful privilege to be self-employed. That in itself is success. Making people happy with the work you provide… that’s success. Creating friendships through work – another success. Creating something that will be appreciated for generations, definitely success! Providing quality work, progressing in my field and being able to contribute to my family’s finances, all that is success to me.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
