Thanks for sharing your story with us Luke. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When my wife and I were expecting our first child, I was anticipating a smooth, positive experience with the healthcare providers we had chosen. After all, healthcare seemed like the one service industry that should provide the best customer service… and we were paying consumers!
I was terribly wrong; we experienced long waits, the difficulty of scheduling appointments, rushed visits, and an overlooked test result that could have been disastrous. The lack of information — including third party online reviews — made us feel that we were going into doctors’ offices blind, not knowing anything about them until we got there.
While I was frustrated, the entrepreneur in me saw an opportunity. I could build a solution to shift the paradigm of healthcare to a consumer-centric model. My two-time business partner, Travis Schneider, and I got back together to start brainstorming the business.
After listening to providers’ pain points, we knew our platform had to lift the burden of online marketing, reputation management, patient acquisition, and front office efficiency off of them so they could focus on patient care rather than business strategy. In order to validate the market, we built the MVP of PatientPop in six weeks and took it door to door to see if it would catch on. It did.
Our assumptions were right — the healthcare providers we showed the platform to were more than ready for the tool. They were sick of paying for expensive marketing consultants without clear results, piecing together various solutions, or putting off growing their business online.
We founded the business in 2014, then joined athenahealth’s More Disruption Please incubator in spring of 2015 (they remain an integration partner today).
PatientPop has been growing rapidly ever since. We started in 2014 with 3 employees, tripled our staff in 2016, and are now at over 200. I’m extremely proud of the product, customer base, and the team I’ve built.
Has it been a smooth road?
Given that this was our third business, we avoided many of the mistakes we had made in the past. Our biggest challenge has been recruiting – hiring a high volume of A-players in a competitive market.
