Meet Luke Campbell of Get On Up Karaoke in Beverly Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Campbell.

Luke, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ten years ago, I was sitting on a ski chair lift in Montana and brainstorming with a college buddy about a business to start that I would really enjoy. He responded, “You’re good at karaoke.” From that moment, I never looked back.

At the time, there were still those ancient things called compact discs and KJ’s (karaoke jockeys) were still lugging around cases of CDs. I didn’t want to go that route. Back in LA, I did a quick search on Craigslist and found a guy in Burbank. Felt like a nerd drug deal, swapping cash in an alley for a hard drive containing karaoke mp3s. Gave me a great foundation to start. Best Buy and Guitar Center credit cards got me the rest.

My first gig was a small house party, first communion. My second was a huge Hollywood wrap party, onstage, for the TV show MEDIUM. Someone stepped on my power and shut the system down mid-song. The venue staff left me in the pitch black dark so I had to pack up with a flashlight. After that, I got a lot of Hannah Montana and High School Musical kid’s birthday parties. I’m thankful I’m not doing those anymore. However, I did learn to show love for music that wasn’t my taste. I’m there to make the party great for the host and guests, not for myself.

My vision was to be LA’s elite karaoke DJ service. Whoever would hire me would get the best: DJ music, professionalism, quality audio tech, and overall service. Once they hired me, I wanted to wow them so they would never try someone else. It worked. I threw money at internet ads to get started but I quickly learned that word of mouth and client retention was my best advertisement. I just had to get in front of people and do my thing.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been smooth probably because I enjoy what I do so much. This entertainment thing is in my blood. I got each member of my family their own Karaoke DJ setup for their homes.

Sometimes I’m faced with party guests who break my equipment or demand I deejay “their vision” of what makes a good party. I try to approach each person with respect and dignity, even if they don’t treat me that way. Only by being forged in the fires of failure have I become more refined, skilled, and confident than when I first began.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Get On Up Karaoke story. Tell us more about the business.
Get On Up Karaoke is an elite Karaoke and DJ service that mixes the perfect party music with karaoke. By collaborating with clients and their valued guests, I tailor each event with an encyclopedic knowledge of music across all genres and eras to make those memorable moments come alive. I earned a reputation as an entertainer’s entertainer, making appearances on KILLER KARAOKE, THE SINGING BEE, and notable network TV shows like HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER.

With over a decade’s of private event experience, I’ve garnered a reputation as LA’s best of the best for Karaoke and DJ mixed events. I will take a complete backseat and let the guests rule the party or step in and give the party a boost by joining in on the fun. I know how to “feel it out” and adjust to the people’s needs and I certainly don’t show off or stand people up. My view of a great party is inclusion. I always invite anyone to join me. People beat themselves up too much over their singing voices. I like to encourage them and keep up the good, positive vibes we all want to feel. I mean, it’s a party!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
When I go to DJ, I feel blessed to be supporting my wife and two-year-old son. Love songs have so much more meaning now than they ever did when I was single! On a business level, I am fortunate to be rostered by a booking manager that found me online and gave me a shot. Anytime a new client reaches me through word of mouth, I consider that pretty fortunate. Also, big opportunities have come my way that have allowed me to meet celebrities. That’s pretty cool.
