Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Ordaz.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Luis. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since I was a teenager, I was always interested in video editing and creating content. While attending college at Cal Lu for my B.A. in Cinema Production I took a diverse set of courses in multimedia art. Since then, I have continued to use Adobe products to grow my skills in each program and make an additional income.
Being a multimedia specialist has allowed me to seek creative opportunities in the things I enjoy in life. My passions include soccer, creating content and music.
After High School, I decided to attend California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks to pursue a degree in the Multimedia Arts with an emphasis in Cinema Production. There I was able to explore different courses in video production and fine tune my skills and understanding of Adobe applications and filming. Through that program, I got hands-on experience and learned from professors who have been involved in many high-end productions & design careers.
Owning a Macbook Pro during college allowed me to take my work anywhere and explore the programs on my own time. One of the first courses that I really enjoyed was Graphic Design and how to use Photoshop. The idea that I could take anything from an image and create new compositions really got me tapped in with my creativity. After graduating college in 2013, I began to seek freelance work as a side-hustle from friends & family. I was able to land video editing jobs and logo design work for the next few years working with local small businesses.
Up until 2018, I then decided to begin filming music events, recaps and create promo videos. I started to tap in with my network and let them know of my services and updated my website to showcase my portfolio. Music has always been an important part of my life but it wasn’t until recently that I put my energy and time in creating content for artists and DJ’s in the music industry.
Has it been a smooth road?
The industry is always changing and so you need to stay up to date with all the program updates as well as new methods in creating content. Luckily YouTube university has been a huge success for me. I’ve been able to search and find the things I want to learn about from filming techniques, how to take different styles of photography, what gear to buy, etc. I’ve also been able to find individuals who are always uploading new content and make great teachers.
The most challenging thing I have faced is the decision to continue my freelance work as a side hustle and supplemental income to my full-time job at a company that I’ve been working for over five years. My passion is in creating content and music but I currently work full time as a coordinator for a road safety contractor. I’ve always felt it’s better to have the security in order to attain certain things in life like buying a house, health care, retirement, savings, etc. But now that I’ve been able to achieve those things and getting closer to turning 30 it’s becoming more of a decision to quit my job and pursue my freelance career full time.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Luis Angelo seeks to define a creative multimedia specialist. Ready to help bring your vision into a reality, you are encouraged to watch videos, glance at designs, and scroll through photography. Luis Angelo manages and develops content for individuals and small businesses.
I am a one stop show for all your creative needs. If I can’t do it, I will find someone in my network that can and add them to the team so it’s a win-win for both sides. Think of me as a design firm of one with the ability to add other freelancers when needed.
I am mostly known for creating or redesigning your business logo & marketing materials as well as directing and editing music videos.
The thing that I am most proud of is the continued growth in the quality of my work and the opportunities I’ve been presented without spending a dime on marketing my services.
The thing that sets me apart is that I do not try and compete with others. I try to focus on what I am doing and what is my next move. People work with real people and if you do not have a positive energy about you or can connect with others, then you will find it difficult to achieve long-lasting relationships with your clients. I treat most of my clients like family and have had the pleasure in growing together. The future is bright!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The Los Angeles area is a creative hub. There are so many ways to create an income from freelance. People all around the world go to LA to make something of themselves so what better time than now when content is king.
I tell my friends that with structure, hard work and a solid team, you can succeed in any business anywhere. You may find it more difficult because of location but if you are willing to work thru the struggles, it is very possible. Biggest thing is you have to know how to market the product or service and place it in front of the right people.
Los Angeles is a melting pot of cultures & art so I have always felt there’s no better place to start your new venture.
