Meet Luis Melo & Jesse Gutierrez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Melo & Jesse Gutierrez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Luis & Jesse. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We are a small, but growing event planning service. In 2012, my partner Jesse and I, Luis, started this business because we love planning and decorating special events. In the beginning, our shop was much smaller; we focused on floral arrangements, balloons, and rentals. As we gained more experience and with the support of our community, we established ourselves as a full event planning service. Our true passion lies in putting together events from head to toe, and setting them up, down to the smallest detail. As of now, we are known as a one-stop-shop. Through the years, we have grown, we have changed, and we have molded our specialties. When we first opened, the area was in the beginning stages of an up and coming neighborhood. It was incredibly difficult because we had no transportation for our equipment, and hardly enough money to invest. However, our effort and dedication were unyielding. To this day, we keep our work ethic consistent. In all honestly, we have spent more sleepless hungry nights than I would like to recall, but never have I regret devoting my heart to this business. We started with nothing more than a small deposit on the rental location and the shop was merely one-third its current size. Today, we are lucky to have a showroom and small warehouse. What makes us different is that we cut out the middle-man, making our service more direct. We pride ourselves on providing quality and customer relations, with a variety of budgets. However, we are also aware of the fast-paced and ever-changing nature of this business. This year, in particular, we have opened up to a new customer base. We thrive off challenges and like to keep an open mind to clients’ input and ideas. My mother, true to her name, Esperanza, was the biggest motivation behind opening the business by providing hope and financial support.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of our biggest setbacks was when our van was stolen, with most of our equipment inside of it – 20 tables and 200 chairs to be exact. It was a recent investment and two nights before an event! We were devastated, as it took us nearly two weeks to recover the vehicle, but our new equipment was never found. Three months later our vehicle was the victim of a hit and run, right in the middle of rush hour. All these obstacles, however, have kept us from being complacent. We don’t keep ourselves down, we work hardest under pressure. There was a moment in 2015 when we were faced with the possibility of closing our shop. We had boxes packed and we began to get rid of displays. As we were ready to close, what kept us from going was a last minute Sweet 16 event of 300 people. Not every party is a profit, sometimes we have barely cut even, or even lost in order to be able to invest. Over the years, we have lost money in flowers and have struggled against broken, unrepairable refrigeration. Still, we have kept our goals and our standards for floral arrangements high; even though that has involved the extra step of receiving fresh product on a daily basis to keep the quality.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the LJ’S PARTYLAND story. Tell us more about the business.
LJS PARTYLAND is known as an event planning service. Our specialty is venue decoration and floral design. We are extremely proud of the positive feedback we have received from our clients, many of which become recurring. We have worked on weddings, quinceaneras and Sweet 16s, corporate events, birthday bashes, baby showers, divorce parties, you name it – we have done it. We have been reputed to exceed our client’s expectations, making their visions a reality. By going the extra mile, we have kept our standards high and maintained ourselves above the competition. We offer a wide range of services, which makes it easier for our clients to plan their event in one place, instead of going to different places to make it happen. We staff certified bartenders and food handling wait staff. In our inventory, we have a large variety of linen and drapery, with access to local vendors that can help us put together custom parties. Another of our skills is our balloon art and decoration. We have worked with customers that need intricate designs, and others who were just looking to have a little fun with hundreds of balloons in a small office space. Our biggest passion overall is floral design – there have been events in which we have worked themes out of bridal bouquets and centerpiece ideas. Sometimes, all we need is a color palette and a few minutes with our client for inspiration on a set up and décor.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We have been lucky to accrue, customers, that value and appreciate our work. We have noted that customers really appeal to attentiveness and charisma, and like to treat every client as such. Unfortunately, we have also had our share of scams and fraudulent payments. Over the years we have learned to be more cautious. Thanks to our effort, word of mouth has kept us very busy. Through these references, we have worked with families and friends of loyal customers. A lot of what we have accomplished has been through trial and error, with investments that never paid off, but added to our overall experience.
