Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Cervantes.
Luis, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story begins in San Diego, California where I was born and raised. I started playing sports at a very young age, including soccer, basketball, baseball, and track & field. It wasn’t until high school, however, that I discovered my love for dance.
One afternoon in my best friend’s living room, we decided to pop in Shaun T’s Hip Hop Abs (yes, the workout video) in hopes to pick up some cool moves. Soon after, we decided to take it up a notch and try out an in-person class at a studio down the street from our school. One class in and we were hooked. Next thing you know, we tried out for the junior team, started competing, and made that studio our home away from home. Dance quickly became my biggest outlet. It got me through some of my toughest years and allowed me to express myself when I couldn’t find the words to do so.
As I went off to college to pursue my business degree, I found myself taking breaks from dance. Yet, it always found a way back into my life. When I was about to complete my undergraduate career, I realized one thing: if I didn’t give my dream a shot, I would regret it for the rest of my life. So, I made the move to Los Angeles in hopes to take on the dance & entertainment industry. With the amazing support from my family and friends, I was able to sign with an amazing dance agency, Go 2 Talent, and pursue my passion. While it has not been an easy journey whatsoever, it has also led me to discover my passion for fitness.
While pursuing a career in dance, I decided to get a part-time job at a fitness studio to help increase my fitness level and knowledge. I quickly fell in love with the environment and the ability to help people change their lifestyles. Wanting to learn more, I decided to get my personal training certification and start making a difference myself. In doing so, I met an amazing friend & fellow trainer, Daniela Celi.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Daniela & I decided to take a leap of faith and start holding our own virtual fitness classes to help keep our community active and motivated during these unprecedented times. Five months later, we have grown our community immensely and have started our brand, Fuego Fitness, offering both high-intensity interval training and dance cardio workouts online.
While at times I’ve felt like my journey has been all over the place, from pursuing my business degree to dance career to personal training profession, I know that everything I’ve done has all led me to be where I am today. I am so incredibly grateful for that.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think anyone’s journey every comes without obstacles, but I like to believe that those obstacles are a reminder that you are capable of more than you think. At times I feel like I am on the path I was destined for, and at times I feel lost and confused. That is the honest truth, but I must remind myself that my hard work and dedication will pay off.
As many dancers in Los Angeles can attest to, the industry is not an easy one. Working job to job, trying to make a steady living off of dance can be tough, especially in such a desirable city. However, it’s the passion that pushes us through. It’s knowing that we wouldn’t want to be doing anything else except dancing.
As far as starting a brand from ground zero, well that is no easy feat either. Every day I come across a challenge I have never faced before. Although it can be difficult, it is also an exciting opportunity to adapt, learn, and grow in ways I never even imagined. At the end of the day, this is something I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m so glad to be doing it with someone who shares the same vision.
Please tell us about Fuego Fitness.
Fuego Fitness provides a variety of online training styles, including strength & cardio hiit, dance cardio, yoga, tennis, and private sessions. As two former athletes, Daniela & I created these workouts to provide the athletic skill sets we’ve learned through our training experience for anyone looking to make fitness a part of their lifestyle.
We are committed to educating and encouraging our community, a.k.a. our Fuego Fam, to work out in the most optimal way while taking the best care of their body through functional training exercises and form-focused personal attention.
For us, it’s all about making sure each and every member feels like the best possible version of themselves.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
This is definitely a thought that I’ve had from time to time. Sometimes I wonder if I should’ve majored in a different subject in school, started dancing at an earlier age or started working out sooner in life. While these thoughts may cross my mind, I always come to the conclusion that if I hadn’t gone down the path I did, I wouldn’t have ended up right here. I am at a point where I get to combine my love for dance, fitness, and business to create something amazing that can help make a difference in people’s lives, and I couldn’t be more excited for that.
