Meet Louis David Najar of Utopia _ MFG (Utopia Manufactured Goods) in Lincoln Heights / East LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Louis David Najar.

Louis David, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been a vintage passionate for 20 years, I started my professional career in a French Shoe company, and discovered manufacturing procedures. After taking on still life photography for a few years, I started to make small items with leather, and that grew into me buying sewing machines, and later on to discover and source a chainstich embroidery machine.

Has it been a smooth road?
Good question – I guess the realistic answer would be to say that it was different for me when I was living in France. Since there was literally no one making this artform there, I felt a lot more comfortable at the time. Moving to LA has brought a different and challenging perspective because there are a lot more people doing it here.

So its definitely a more crowded scene here in California, but its also interesting that there are also more knowledge of the artform.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Utopia _ MFG (Utopia Manufactured Goods) – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I do customized One Off chainstitch embroidery.

I also manufacture leather items, restorations, alterations, jean repairs.

It would be fair to say that Utopia has built a reputation for its chainstitch embroidery.

As a company and as an entrepreneur, I am very proud of using such old and outdated technology (machines date back to 1880) to be self-taught and to passionately applicate designs on existing garments. People bring an idea, and with thread and creativity, Utopia turns your vision into reality.

Simply the fact that I can introduce some of my personal taste in my creations already feels like going towards unique and original.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the weather, the proximity with mountain and sea, the Latin culture from the West Coast, and the manufacturing industry is quite huge too, which allows easier sourcing of materials, threads, machine parts essential to my activity.

Ironically, the Hollywood glow creates a lot of business, but it also creates a sort of superficiality atmosphere. I’ve had to find new purpose to my creations, because when they have meaning things go further than wanting attention.
