Stefania, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am from a very small town called Montepescali, Grosseto, Tuscany. I’ve loved photography since I was 8, when I saw my cousin at work, printing and cleaning some pictures. It was a magic moment that made something click inside me and tied me to the medium and the world that it can create. I got my first camera at 8 years old (a Canon junior), then my uncle gave me, my first Nikon FA2, and I got stuck with Nikon since then. From that day on I‘ve used a lens to look at my family and friends: it’s something between me and the world around, but it helps me to pay attention to things in a deeper way, you are involved in a scene but you are also a witness, you are part of the world but you are invisible too. The moment in a person’s life, be it a famous singer or someone I met in a bar, that is stolen by the camera, it is something I like hanging on to. Besides photography, my great passions are cinema and rock music. My favorite band is Pearl Jam, and I have 2 PJ tattoos to prove it. I take pictures of everything, from landscapes to portrait, but I feel completely alive when I shoot concerts and bts on movie set. I have just a few seconds to snap, and I often have to deal with adverse lighting to capture atmosphere, music, faces and emotions. This gets my adrenaline going. To this day, I haven’t totally abandoned film. Black and white, goes without saying.

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth? What’s smooth? Lol…. I dunno that word! The struggle is real and I am still struggling.  It’s not easy, in general, to live with your passion and not at all when you live in a country that is not yours. Visa, money, unless you have a rich family that supports you, languages barriers, faraway affects etc…  Even if here in LA I had so many opportunists, that I could only have dreamed in Italy.  But I love challenges so here I am standing!!

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
I must say, being an Italian girl, from a small town in Tuscany, I had few proud moments! Definitely, the first time I got published on Man Vogue Italy with photos of my friend John Hawkes…. And being the set photographer of an amazing little movie called “Lucky”, starring two legendary actors like Harry Dean Stanton and David Lynch, which will be presented at the next Sundance Film Festival.

Every story has ups and downs. What were some of the downs others might not be aware of?
There are still moments of struggle! Being a foreign is not easy! And I am not yet a Union still photographer, then I hope I can work for a decent pay!!

What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
I love Los Angeles with all of my heart. Here I could do many amazing things that I could only imagine in Italy. Yes, I would recommend LA but better if you are already rich!! Ahah! My only problem, unfortunately, is tight of the Visa.
