Meet Lizette A. Vargas of DTLA Wanderer in Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lizette A. Vargas.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started in my parents living room, I was seven years old producing workout videos with my dad’s camcorder. I knew even at that young age that I wanted to be in the creative world. When it was time to go to college, I declared a Marketing major and never looked back.

Since then, I’ve been staying up to date on the latest marketing trends. Digital Marketing is the present and the future. Today’s world is one in which we are able to make an impact at a local and global level. Our message can reach the masses in an instant. Our voice really is a powerful tool, and I decided that I wanted to be a part of that movement to help bring positive light to the social media world.

My social media journey began four years ago when I helped a company start from its infancy to building an entire team of bloggers, photographers, and community. Since then I have helped many other accounts grow. All organic. No fake followers. No follow-for-follow. Just genuine engagement with the community.

I started DTLA Wanderer two years ago with a desire to stay true to the community I live, work and play in… DTLA! I love helping businesses by not only exposing them on my page but also by helping them manage their social media. I’ve had the pleasure of working with companies such as the LA Phil, Hollywood Bowl, Goldenvoice, the City of Los Angeles, Little Fluffy Head, and many more staples of DTLA.

Up until five months ago, I was working a full-time Marketing job in the banking world. I would work from 5:30am-8:00 am on social media, go to work for nine hours and then again jump onto the Digital Marketing world to help my side clients. I knew then that what I really wanted to be was a digital nomad. I made the leap in early 2018 and have since been able to do most of my business from my cell phone. It is such a treat to manage social media from anywhere in the world.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve definitely had struggles along the way. That same company I helped develop four years ago, was taken from me from one day to the next. One night while I was sleeping, the co-founder changed all passwords on me. I was blindsided.

The two years of time and energy to help build a community and following of 80,000 was gone in an instant. It was heartbreaking. However, with struggles come opportunities. Just like that, I had to decide what I was going to do next.

That’s when DTLA Wanderer was born. I made a commitment to continue doing what I loved and to be a source for things going on in my city!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about DTLA Wanderer – what should we know?
DTLA Wanderer is unique from other hyperlocal accounts because I am ingrained in the DTLA community and experience things before recommending them. I also host a ton of giveaways. I love to be witty, punny, funny and inspiring and try to portray that through my messaging. It’s important to me to connect people to experiences no matter where they come from. If you’re a business owner and need some social media guidance or management, I’m your girl!

What were you like growing up?
I was raised in an underprivileged community where many of my neighbors ended up in gangs or in jail—never having been exposed to anything outside of their community. I was lucky to have a father and sister who loved to explore and travel. They instilled a curiosity in me, and because of that, I have been able to travel the world and collect countless experiences.

When not traveling the world I use that same curiosity to find the unique gems in downtown LA. My passion is to share all of the amazing things there are to see and do in my city with as many people as possible. Are you culturally curious? Follow @dtlawanderer and fall in love with DTLA!
