Meet Liza Philosof

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liza Philosof.

Liza, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a visual artist, graphic designer, art director, and water lover, born and raised in a little beach town called Nahariya in Israel, with a sailor father and a mother that can׳t miss a day without going to the sea, as a little baby, I sailed with my father and mother on large ships and even crossed the Atlantic Ocean as part of my father work. I remember seeing dolphins for the first time, swimming freely, it was very exciting. I got a canvas and acrylic for the first time at the age of six. It was the sweetest gift from my mother’s best friend, around that time I’ve started painting and jumped between different art and craft works.

In 2007, after graduating from high school and finished my service in the army (A mandatory duty for all Israelis citizen) I moved to Jerusalem and started my studies at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, at the Department of Visual Communication, which is one of the most demanding and intensive of all departments, I did not really sleep in the four years that I studied there. I’ve graduated with a Bachelor in 2011.

Over the years, I have worked in various fields of graphic design and art directing, my last job in Tel Aviv was the art director of an art & design magazine Time Out Tel-Aviv. As part of my work, I needed to direct and guide graphic designers. And make sure that everything is running correctly under a very tight schedule. Four years ago, I came to California for the first time. I’ve fallen in love and made a major shift. 2.5 years ago, I’ve moved officially to L.A. In recent years, I worked a lot with designers, artists, and musicians while continuing to participate in exhibitions, festivals, projects, and partnerships all over the world. Some brand collaborations included: Adidas originals, Absolut Vodka, Heineken beer, Insight, XRAY eyewear, Cannes Film Festival, and Azores Fringe Festival.

Has it been a smooth road?
Certainly, there was a challenge to move to a new city like LA, and start working in the field of design and art. In the beginning, most of my time went to graphics design, art directing and consulting but in the last year I was able to focus more on creating art. My first solo exhibition in L.A, L A Y E R  was opened on November 15th and will be up for two weeks, until November 29th.  closing event and artist talk on November 29th 7-10pm at Helms Design Center, Culver City. We’d love to hear more about what you do.
For my art, I can say I am a multidisciplinary artist, last year I focused on video, and this year is mostly paintings.  I see my paintings as a visual extension of my emotional journey in life. A reflection of the struggles and challenges we all have. Climbing a mountain or crossing an ocean are just metaphors of deep tectonic movement happening in our souls. In paintings, I try to embrace observing nature with an interpretation of what our inner world looks like. I feel that one of my secret missions is to continue to see life in color. I think I have known by my A colorful palette and my “clean” line and I hear that my art is happy often. one of the most creative projects was with XRAY eyewear we collaborate and create a limited collection based on my paintings. for graphic design, I create a unique custom made visual language based on my client needs. I believe that the client has all the answers I just need to ask the right questions, my goal is to find a visual translation for the values my clients bring with them and let them shine.
